Real Alternative hits 2.0 milestone with a quiet update

Real Alternative
Real Alternative is an awesome little Windows utility that lets you watch RealVideo and listen to RealAudio files without installing RealPlayer. Although RealPlayer has come a long way in recent years, many people still find it cumbersome and awkward to use.

Real Alternative installs the codecs you need to access much of the content available in RealPlayer using a light weight media player called Media Player Classic. There are also plugins for Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Google Chrome that let you interact with RealMedia content from your browser.

The application hit version 2.0 recently, but despite the rather monumental name, it looks like the update brings a handful of relatively minor updates. Probably the most significant change is that the browser plugin now works in Internet Explorer 8. The versions of Media Player Clasice and the RealMedia components have also been updated. But I figured the anniversary was a good time to point out three things:
  1. Real Alternative is kind of awesome.
  2. It's been chugging along quietly for years.
  3. Flash has all-but replaced RealMedia as the default media platform for the web.
That last point was driven home when I installed Real Alternative 2.0 today to test it out. It took me a good 10 minutes to find a web site that actually streamed audio or video in RealMedia. A few years ago, it would have been hard to find a site using any other media format.

Keeping up with Apple: QuickTime Alternative 2.7 released

Quicktime Alternative
Hot on the heels of the release of QuickTime 7.5.5 yesterday, the makers of QuickTime Alternative have released version 2.7: with support for QuickTime 7.5.5 files.

QuickTime Alternative is a Windows program for users who might occasionally want to watch a QuickTime file but don't want to install Apple's media player. The program is bundled with Media Player Classic, an open source Windows media playback utility that looks a lot like Windows Media Player 6. You can use Media Player Classic to watch MOV files you've downloaded to your hard drive. Or you can install the browser plugin to watch files embedded on web pages. The latest version of QuickTime Alternative incldues support for Google Chrome as well as Firefox, Netscape, and Opera.

QuickTime Alternative makes use of the codecs taken from Apple software but is not an official Apple product.

Media Player Classic Home Cinema Edition: All in one media player

Media Player Classice HCE
Media Player Classic is an audio and video player for Windows that looks like Windows Media Player 6.4, but works a bit more like all-in-one media application VLC. Each application is open source, and each can handle almost any audio or video file you throw at it. But that doesn't mean there isn't room for improvement.

Media Player Classic Home Cinema Edition takes the basic version of MPC and adds a few extra features, including:
  • Support for additional decoders, including H.264 and VC-1 with DXVA support
  • Improved support for Windows Vista, including a 64 bit release
  • Translation into additional languages
The media player takes up just a few megabytes and doesn't require installation, so you can throw it on a USB flash drive and carry it around with you.

3 free video players for watching almost any movie

GOM Player, KMPlayer, and rulesPlayer
Last week we told you about SMPlayer, a powerful, yet easy to use frontend for open source media player MPlayer. We were pretty impressed with SMPlayer, which can run on Windows or Linux and can handle almost any format except for Real Media.

But our wonderful readers pointed out that SMPlayer was hardly unique. You've probably heard of VLC, but here are three other media players that can handle pretty much any video you can throw at them. Oh yeah, and they're all absolutely free.

Watch almost any video with SMPlayer

SMPlayerThere are a lot of useful media players out there for handling pretty much any video format you can throw at them. VLC is a pretty nifty all-in-one solution, as is Media Player Classic.

Martin over at gHacks just turned us onto another powerful media player, SMPlayer. It's a front-end for MPlayer, and comes in Linux and Windows flavors. There's also support for a whole slew of languages.

The best thing about SMPlayer is that it just works out of the box. You don't need to install any additional codecs, and it will handle everything from Quicktime movies to Windows Media Video. Of course it has no problem with DivX, XviD, and other MPEG-1/2/4 varieties. It does not appear to support Real Media files.

Is SMPlayer a VLC killer? It's hard to say. But it does have a clean, simple interface that makes it pretty attractive if you find the bells and whistles of VLC a bit confusing.

Graveyard Shift - zombie-busting Time Waster

With Halloween fast approaching, it's a great time to get in some practice defending your territory against zombies. In Graveyard Shift, you take aim at zombies and other creepy-crawlies, blasting them into splatters of cartoony green guts. It's a casual first-person shooter, and it's very easy to get the hang of - use the mouse to aim, click to fire. Graveyard Shift has at least 15 levels, and it might even have some secret stages I haven't unlocked yet. They key to getting good at Graveyard Shift is learning to use ...
