Firefox 2.0.0.5 Now Available

In their ever-continuing quest against security flaws in Firefox, the Mozilla Corporation has just updated Firefox to the awkwardly numbered version 2.0.0.5. Eight flaws are fixed in this release - three of which are marked as critical. Those of you wanting to know exactly which vulnerabilities have been fixed might want to check out the Vulnerabilities page at the Mozilla homepage.

If you're already running Firefox 2.0.0.x, then the auto-update mechanism will inform you of the update "within 24-48 hours" and Mozilla folks are also reminding folks that they have ceased support for Firefox 1.5.0.x, stating "you are highly encouraged to upgrade to the Firefox 2 series". For those of us using specialised builds (such as the Intel or PowerPC Mac OS X-optimised Bon Echo versions), we'd hazard a guess that updated versions of those are also on their way in due course from the respective third parties who build them.

Vista ads drive Pirillo nuts, but we still love Demetri Martin

I'll have to admit that I'm not in the U.S. much these days, and as a result I'm not seeing these commercials on TV at a schedule dictated by the cable channel, but rather online at a moment of my choosing. Still, I think the loveable LockerGnome, a.k.a. Chris Pirillo, has gone a little mad. Pirillo writes, "[T]he network is running nonsensical clips of some "old guy" teasing people to TheIAP.org - where you're pointed to an even more confusing teaser link (Clearification.com). [...] Microsoft: you had a TREMENDOUS opportunity to blow people away with what you put in Windows Vista. Instead, you send them to Web sites that don't make any sense."

I'll admit, these aren't the most in-your-face buy yourself-some-Vista commercials. The teasers lead to "viral" short films featuring Demetri Martin who, in my humble opinion, is one of the funniest comics working today. It's not so far fetched when you think about it, Apple has John Hodgman, Microsoft has Demetri. The Apple commercials are so well constructed that, to tear them apart by rebutting any Mac vs. PC feature comparison would be admitting that Apple's marketing has gotten to them. The Vista commercials let you know who's responsible for the viral funny you're watching but, do nothing to pitch the product itself. It's guilt by association. Face it, we're watching the future of marketing.

Find out where your Mac was built

find out where your apple was builtI'm sure that people often wonder where their Mac was all put together and made its first appearance to the world as an official Apple computer. coconutIdentityCard is a small application that will let you know where and when your Apple computer, and iPod were built. Your iPod has to be plugged into your Apple computer when the software is running in order for the system to figure out when and where it was built. When you enter your 11 character Apple serial number into the application, you will also see the the actual build location and the date the product was built by Apple. A great feature that coconutIdentityCard holds is the ability to cross reference your serial number with an online database of stolen Apple products. The only drawback is this app is only available for Mac OS X.

The OS X Leopard that might have been

Fake Leopard Screenshot ContestApple gets a lot of accolades for its user interface design, and even Microsoft is turning some heads with Vista and Office 2007, but they should both be paying attention to the OS Eric Patterson made. Unfortunately for us, Eric Patterson's OS isn't real: It's just a mock-up of what he thinks Mac OS 10.5 Leopard should look like, and it's cool enough to have won Phill Ryu's Fake Leopard Screenshot Contest. Ryu challenged would-be interface designers to envision the future of Mac OS X, and the results are truly stunning. Patterson's improvements are attractive, refined, and downright cool, and the other winners and runners-up are much the same. These people should be working for Apple--I want this stuff now!

Run Mac OS on your PSP or Nintendo DS

Mac OS on Nintendo DSWe've got It Plays Doom, are we going to have It Runs Mac OS next? Intrepid hackers are busy putting older versions of Apple's operating system on some more modern portable devices, including the Nintendo DS (or an emulator, at least) and Sony PSP, and of course posted videos of them showing off their feats on Google Video and YouTube. Take a look below the break to see them in action.

Graveyard Shift - zombie-busting Time Waster

With Halloween fast approaching, it's a great time to get in some practice defending your territory against zombies. In Graveyard Shift, you take aim at zombies and other creepy-crawlies, blasting them into splatters of cartoony green guts. It's a casual first-person shooter, and it's very easy to get the hang of - use the mouse to aim, click to fire. Graveyard Shift has at least 15 levels, and it might even have some secret stages I haven't unlocked yet. They key to getting good at Graveyard Shift is learning to use ...
