Another iPhone app pulled: this time it's PhoneSaber

Earlier this week, I told you how the $1000 do-nothing application called I Am Rich had been pulled from the iTunes app store. While I doubt many people miss that particular bit of software, the latest app to be removed from the store was actually kind of fun: it's PhoneSaber, a lightsaber simulator for your iPhone. It uses the accelerometer in your device to respond as you swing your phone, making noises straight out of Star Wars. It was also free.

According to TheMacBox, the creators of the app, "I've had a chat with a guy from THQ Wireless (who own the rights for Star Wars apps on mobiles) and as we were always expecting, PhoneSaber is not allowed to be on there." Apparently THQ discussed the idea of an official, licensed PhoneSaber app, which could be tied to Star Wars advertising. TheMacBox is being given access to the original saber sounds to develop the new app, and they're pushing for it to remain free. If you have PhoneSaber already, you're probably safe: since the creators removed the app voluntarily, Apple probably won't remotely delete it from your device.

ScummVM 0.10.0 released

ScummVM ScummVM has hit its first double digit (but still beta) release. ScummVM started out as a game engine capable of running old LucasArts games built for the Scumm engine. Over the last few years, it's transformed over the years into a cross-platform system for running dozens of classic video games, including some early Sierra Adventure games.

Version 0.10.0 is available for OS X, Linux, Windows, Windows mobile, the Nintendo DS, and a bunch of other operating systems/platforms. Updates include:
  • Support for Future Wars
  • Support for Gobliins 2
  • Support for Gobliins 3
  • Support for Ween: The Prophecy
  • Support for Bargon Attack
  • Support for Nippon Safes
  • Support for Sierra AGI games including the early Kings Quest, Police Quest, and Space Quest titles
There are also under the hood tweaks and bug fixes which should mean improved speed and reliability, particularly on the mobile versions for Nintendo DS, Symbian, Windows Mobile and Palm systems.

Remember, most of these games are still protected by copyrights, and it's only legal to play them if you own the original disks. A few adventure games have been released for free, and can be downloaded from the ScummVM downloads page.

Tips on playing old PC games on your PDA

LedheadWe're going to let you in on a little secret. That article we wrote the other day about playing Magnetic Scrolls games on your Windows Mobile phone or PDA? That's just one of many ways to relive the 1980s and early 90s with your PDA. You can also run LucasArts, Sierra, Atari, Nintendo, and even Mattel LED games.

One of the best resources for finding information on getting these old games to run on your new device is Smartphone and Pocket PC Magazine's column by Werner Ruotsalainen. In just the past few days, he's featured posts on Mattel and Sierra games, and updated his excellent Windows Mobile web browser bible.

Sure, most of this information is out there if you're willing to look for it piecemeal. But if you're in the market for a few good games or a comprehensive comparison of every web browser available for Windows Mobile, you should check out Ruotsalainen's blog.

Top 5 emulators for Windows Mobile - Mobile Minute

ScummVM - Beneath a Steel SkyIn the last two Mobile Minutes we've focused on productivity tips: How to sync your PDA with Thunderbird, and replacements for the built in file explorer. But we all know the real reason you lug a tiny computer around with you isn't to keep your contacts and appointments within arm's reach. It's for playing games in board meetings.

With that, we bring you Download Squad's top 5 emulators for Windows Mobile. Each of the following programs has been tested on a PDA running Windows Mobile 2003SE with a VGA screen. They should all work on Windows Mobile 5.0 devices with VGA or QVGA screens.

Keep in mind that while the emulators are all free it is against the law to download commercial video game ROMS. There are a number of resources out there for finding free and legal "homebrew" or demo games. Or you can always convert your own game cartridges or discs into ROMS.

Forumwarz - a potentially offensive time waster

I pwn UAfter spending the better part of an hour on Forumwarz I still can't decide if it's just sick or if it's kind of fun. It's a bit like a car wreck on the highway. I know I shouldn't be looking but I can't quite turn away.

It's sick, it's twisted, it's the internet on it's worst level and darn it, it's kind of fun. At least for a little while.

Forumwarz is a parody role-playing game that takes place on the internet - or at least the Forumwarz version of it. Your goal is to complete missions that are given to you through a mock up of GoogleTalk called Sentrillion.

Your first "friend" is ShallowEsophagus who begins giving you missions to pwn various forums by being a troll. Depending on the character type you are assigned at start up, you have tools like drooling on the keyboard or bashing your head on the keyboard that you can use to destroy forum threads and eventually, pwn a forum.

Future missions involve buying illegal software from the Russians, pwning more difficult forums and other internet oddness.

Completing missions gives you cash, called Flezz in game, and items that you can pawn or use in other missions. The game is NOT for those easily offended. It's crass, coarse and there are frequent f-bombs in the fake chat sessions.

This is also a game for a more mature audience as it requires you to shop at the Drugs R Fun store to get various concoctions to improve your playing, engage in certain cyber activities to get more Flezz and just generally use a more adult perspective.

If you can get past that, here are the more enjoyable and time-wasting aspects.
