Korea's new fiber may give us all serious broadband

Fiber opticsWe all knew this would happen someday. Maybe it isn't quite available the whole world yet, but Korea is certainly getting there. What am I talking about? High speed fiber to your house at 1 Gbps and beyond. They have also varied the frame length so they can fit 512 users on a single line instead of the previous 16. Sure, we've heard it all before, but now that it may be a commercial possibility because of new technology, we will begin to push the limits once again of what is possible. This mega-bandwidth will change the world in ways we never thought possible. For one thing doctors will be able to perform operations from remote distances. There are many applications of the technology in the commercial sector, not to mention for consumers. What would you do with 1 Gbps of throughput at your disposal?

Gunz - Today's Time Waster

gunz the duel
There are tons of online MMORPG's, right? How many are free? Now how many of those are really worth the investment in time? Yeah, that's what I thought. While it might not be as engrossing or open as Battle for Westnoth, Gunz: the Duel is a thrilling ride. Gunz is a Korean-based MMORPG with elements of The Matrix and Oni wrapped in an online RPG with some teeth. While Gunz is free to a point, like other MMORPG's, you can buy upgrades with real money. The word beta is plastered all over the Gunz site, and it's worth keeping in mind the game may someday not be free. It's Windows-only, but worth the time to learn all the killer moves. And there are lots of great moves, most of which take a lot of practice to master. You twitchers out there will have a field day. Besides, nothing beats being able to hack some folks to pieces while running along the wall of a long corridor. The fact that you can do this while cracking open a beer with your other (real) hand is a bonus. Read more about Gunz: the Duel on Wikipedia.

Music Brothers - Today's Time Waster

Music BrothersMusic Brothers is a Korean Flash game that begs to be compared to Dance Dance Revolution, but I'll dispense with that and just tell you what it's like: You guide a group of cute dancing blobs along a path of arrows. You progress by pressing the arrow key that matches the next arrow on the path. Each key you press plays a musical note and each level is a little song that you have to complete before your time runs out. If you press a wrong key you'll lose one of the blobs from your group, but you can gain more blobs or get other bonuses by pressing space bar when you encounter round faces on the path. The graphics are adorable, you have several choices of sound schemes when you begin the game, and overall the game is surprisingly challenging and addicting.

The World's Hardest Game 2.0 - Time Waster

So, just how good at time waster games are you? Think you've got the stuff? Well, The World's Hardest Game 2.0 doesn't think you do. Yes, amazingly, it's possible to have a sequel to a game called "The World's Hardest Game". It doesn't seem logically possible, since if the first one was actually the world's hardest, how could another one come along and share the moniker? It made me doubt the name in the first place. That is, until I tried the game. The mechanics of the game are very simple. You are a small red square, ...
