Apple releases iWork 09

It's been almost 17 months to the day since Apple last made significant (paid) updates to their flagship iWork productivity suite, but the company has announced that iWork 09 is now available.

All three iWork applications have seen updates, and Apple has also announced an iWork.com Public Beta allowing users to view and comment on iWork documents.

Among the changes to the desktop applications, Keynote allows you to animate objects automatically, whilst the Smart Move option allows you to slickly animate objects between slides. Pages, the iWork word processor, now ships with a built in 'Full Screen' mode for full-focus writing, and outline mode for project organization. There's also another 40 templates for your documents in this new version. The Numbers spreadsheet application allows you to categorize data far more quickly than in previous versions, includes an enhanced function browser and a formula list to quickly jump around your documents.

iWork '09 is available for $79 from the Apple Store.

It's that time again! Apple Keynote in 60 Seconds

So some guy named Steve Jobs got up on stage at something called the WWDC yesterday and talked about some products from a company called...orange or banana? Or was it carrot.

Oh, Apple, that's right.

It was long. And sometimes boring. So thanks to Mahalo Daily, here it is in Sixty Seconds. Did we get our iPhone with iRobot and iHateMakingMyOwnCoffee? We do get Exchange integration and now we're all Mobile with MobileMe and plus Apps for iPhone coming July 11th. Whew, that's a lot.

What they left out was that the new OS Snow Leopard or Rain Monkey or whatever (coming next year), will support multi-core processors, AND be able to take advantage of even more RAM (up to 16TB!).

See for yourselves.

280Slides: great new web-based presentation software

280slides
The first thing you'll probably notice about the new web-based presentation creator, 280Slides, is that it looks an awful lot like Apple's Keynote. As great as Keynote is, 280Slides has a few advantages: it's free and it's web-based. It's got all the features you would expect from good presentation software: you can present in full-screen mode straight from the web, download your slides, or share your presentation to SlideShare. Vimeo and Youtube integration let you add video to the mix, too.

We can already see 280slides saving numerous butts at conferences. Equipment failure? No big deal, just borrow a computer (any platform will do!) and pull your stuff from the web. Presentations were a good candidate for the next desktop function to hop aboard the "cloud computing" bandwagon and go web-based, and the folks at 280 North have pulled it off with style and functionality. Frankly, we're a little relieved that we'll never again have to ask, "Hey, does this machine have PowerPoint?"

Done in 60 seconds: The Steve Jobs Keynote

So you can't find time in your day to watch the 90 minute Steve Jobs Keynote that took place yesterday, even though you live and breathe Apple? Is your computer in the manager's line of sight, so you can't even watch it at work?

Mahalo Daily has got you covered: they've managed to shoehorn the Steve Jobs Keynote into 60 seconds. No, this isn't some fancy new video compression; let's just call it a "highlight reel." Or, better yet, a "highlight reel with ADD."

So how much of Steve's reality distortion field comes through in 60 seconds? Plenty: when Steve slides the MacBook Air from that plain manila envelope, it was all we could do to keep from licking the screen.

iRed Lite - control any app with your Apple remote

iRed LiteIf you have a Mac with a remote (and almost all of them ship with one these days), you might have been slightly dismayed to realize that other than controlling media playback there's not a lot you can do with it. As usual, someone has solved this problem.

iRed Lite is a little utility that you can run on your Mac that will listen to commands from your remote and control other programs, like iPhoto, Keynote, PowerPoint, or basically anything else you choose. In our experience configuration can be a little finicky (we never did get the Mouse Control plugin to work properly), but overall it performs as advertised in its current beta state.

Download Squad First Look and Gallery: Apple iWork '08 in the spotlight

Hot on the heels of today's new iLife suite, iWork '08 comes to the table too. Whilst new Keynote, and Pages, features are expected, the most hotly tipped question was "Would Apple bring out an Excel rival"? Behold Numbers and so much more.

Macworld 2007 Stevenote Live Blog at TUAW

TUAWIf you a) are an Apple fan (or are just Mac-curious) and b) enjoy refreshing your browser, you should do what I'm doing and head over to our sister blog TUAW, where they're liveblogging Steve Jobs' keynote right now. Speculation as to whether any Earth-shattering plans will be revealed today is rampant as ever--iPhone? iTV? iBex? Tune in to find out. If your reloading finger gets tired and you're a Firefox user, I recommend the ReloadEvery add-on. And when the Stevenote is through, check out TUAW's hot new photo galleries.

Update: Also check out Engadget's Stevenote coverage.

Liveblogging Steve Jobs' WWDC keynote

WWDC
In case you've been living under a rock, today kicks off Apple's 2006 Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in San Francisco. Steve Jobs will be delivering his keynote at 1pm EST, and if up-to-the-minute "Stevenote" coverage is your kind of thing, both TUAW and Engadget will be liveblogging it. To quote Scott over at The Unofficial Apple Weblog, "Well, we know for sure that a preview of Leopard (Mac OS 10.5) will be shown, I am sure iPod sales will be recapped, and I think Steve will say 'Boom' a few times. Other than that, your guess is as good as mine." If the photo above from the Moscone Center (courtesy Engadget) is any indication, things are about to get a little catty.

Graveyard Shift - zombie-busting Time Waster

With Halloween fast approaching, it's a great time to get in some practice defending your territory against zombies. In Graveyard Shift, you take aim at zombies and other creepy-crawlies, blasting them into splatters of cartoony green guts. It's a casual first-person shooter, and it's very easy to get the hang of - use the mouse to aim, click to fire. Graveyard Shift has at least 15 levels, and it might even have some secret stages I haven't unlocked yet. They key to getting good at Graveyard Shift is learning to use ...
