25 awesome Cross-platform games you can download for free

Regardless of what operating system you run on your computer, it doesn't have to be all work and no play. Heck, that could turn you into some kind of axe-wielding homicidal maniac bent on destroying your own family while watching over a remote resort hotel in the dead of winter.

I'd certainly never want that to happen to any of our DownloadSquad readers, so here's a list of games that you can install on Windows, Mac, and Linux (and some even on BeOS and BSD). Enjoy!

...And, as usual, if there's a particularly killer cross-platform game that I didn't include, feel free to post it in the comments -- and tell us why you love it!

Battle for Wesnoth - One of the best known open source games around, Wesnoth is an excellent fantasy-themed turn-based strategy game. There's plenty here to keep you busy - multiple campaigns and large maps, and online multiplayer for when you grow weary of playing on your own.

Battle Tanks - It's got colorful, cartoonish graphics, massive explosions, tanks....And best of all, it's got multiplayer. What could be more fun than blowing up your friends while causing immeasurable damage to an unsuspecting city?

Second Life: Interview with an insider

This is a recent in-world IM interview I had with Akela Talamasca who blogs for Weblogs, Inc's own Second Life Insider (SLI). Since Second Life is a free software download, an online world that is user-created, and is very much web-based social software and 3D tool, I thought an interview would be very interesting to those who haven't heard of SecondLife or experienced it. Please enjoy, and let me know what you think of the interview. While you're at it, check out SecondLife Insider as well.

Ryan Carter: Akela, you blog over at Weblogs, inc's Second Life Insider (SLI), what is that all about?

Akela Talamasca:
It's a blog designed solely to cover Second Life, in the same way that WoW Insider solely covers World
of Warcraft. I have a team of bloggers: Caliandris Pendragon, Mast Penguin, and Aimee Weber, who gets a ton of coverage for her own work in SL.

RC:
You've got a great team, I enjoy reading everyone at SLI.

AT:
Hey, thanks! I read DL Squad everyday!

RC:
So, for anyone who hasn't heard, what is Second Life (SL)?

AT:
Second Life is an online virtual world, created entirely by its residents. It has a working economy, with thousands of real world dollars being traded for goods every month. Currently, registration for an account is free, but to own land requires a paid monthly account. There are numerous benefits to owning land, including being able to build more objects, own a home, and stream music from your computer. SL is rapidly approaching one million residents, which many predict will occur between October and November.

RC:
Why do you think DLS readers might be interested in SL? Is there something for everyone? Programmers, geeks, business people, students, corporations even?

nVidia makes the first 80nm GPU

nVidia GeForce Go 7 seriesnVidia, the graphics tycoon, has developed a graphics chip (nVidia GeForce Go 7700) made with the first 80nm manufacturing process, the thinnest to date of any graphics card process used. Nvidia's older chips with very similar specs were made via a 90nm process (nVidia GeForce Go 7600). There isn't a huge increase in performance in the chips yet (that I can tell), but the less energy consumed by the chips may help the prices drop a little for consumers and game-fanatics. Lower prices or even a slight decrease in heat is always welcome in the gaming business, and you never know, the new process may lead the way for smaller, better chips in the near future.

Special Forces Overmatch, the Army's new game

Special Forces: Overmatch
Special Forces: Overmatch 2.7.0 may interest members of the military or fans of war games. The Army is trying to impress gamers, possibly win support for their cause, or perhaps even recruit from their game's fanbase. You never can tell, but it looks like they have done a great job. The Army's game looks pretty tempting, but be aware that the download is 2.5 GB, so you'll have to hold off the enemy for a bit longer on this one to accomplish this downloading objective. Get comfortable in that foxhole solider! The game made news this week, when so many gamers went to download it, that they had to suspend downloads for a while. As of this writing, the game is ready for download once again. If you are a fan of war games, like Medal of Honor, Call of Duty, and others you may enjoy this game because of its similar focus. Since I haven't yet played the game (still downloading) I can't vouch for the gameplay and overall quality of the game, but it looks good, so give it a shot and see what you think. The new version (2.7.0) is available on Windows, and the version for both Mac and Linux is 2.3.0.

Gunz - Today's Time Waster

gunz the duel
There are tons of online MMORPG's, right? How many are free? Now how many of those are really worth the investment in time? Yeah, that's what I thought. While it might not be as engrossing or open as Battle for Westnoth, Gunz: the Duel is a thrilling ride. Gunz is a Korean-based MMORPG with elements of The Matrix and Oni wrapped in an online RPG with some teeth. While Gunz is free to a point, like other MMORPG's, you can buy upgrades with real money. The word beta is plastered all over the Gunz site, and it's worth keeping in mind the game may someday not be free. It's Windows-only, but worth the time to learn all the killer moves. And there are lots of great moves, most of which take a lot of practice to master. You twitchers out there will have a field day. Besides, nothing beats being able to hack some folks to pieces while running along the wall of a long corridor. The fact that you can do this while cracking open a beer with your other (real) hand is a bonus. Read more about Gunz: the Duel on Wikipedia.

Life on Mars - Today's Time Waster

life on marsAs if this world wasn't wacky enough for you, along comes the web game show "Know Like an Earthling." Apparently once tied to a show on Australian TV, the Life on Mars site is still up so you can still play the games— all 30 of them. They're Wario Ware type mini games, like slap the mosquito (similar to a game I used to play in System 7 on my Mac), and Talk Show Chair Smash. Each game is supposed to be a location on Earth (Finland has a hot tub game, India gets a Bollywood inspired one). They're quick, cutesy, but fun.

Soda Constructor - Today's Time Waster

soda constructorThis won a Webby a few years ago, and I'm surprised it hasn't come up before, but Soda Constuctor is a favorite of mine. Designed as a teaching tool, Soda Constructor is a Java toy for designing little robots, made of strings and connections. These automotons can be animated, on their own, and try to walk around an environment you control (things like gravity are adjustable). Lots of fun tinkering around, but even more fun to really try and build something stable an interesting. Thanks to Mark for sending this in!

Liberated Games - Commercial games that have become free

Here's a follow-up on our post about DOSBox. If you're looking for some free games to play on your new old-school emulated DOS system, check out Liberated Games. Liberated Games has a great list of games that are free to download from various computing eras. You will find the likes of the original top-down Grand Theft Auto, BMX Simulator, or even Quake III: Arena, and all for free. Some games are open-source offerings with source code available, while others are strictly binaries.

The creators of the site are currently looking for some assistance maintaining it, so if you have a passion for free games, maybe offer to lend some assistance. This is the kind of online endeavor that deserves some support.

Bunny Hunt - Today's Time Waster

bunny huntWhether or not you celebrate Easter, it's fun to shoot bunnies, right? Well Bunny Hunt lets you do just that. Don't tell my daughter though, she's determined to get a pet bunny. As a result, I can't play this with her around, but I could say that for about half of the games I play... Just a simple shoot-the-bunny-when-it-pops-up. You know, like whack-a-mole. Now where's the Pooh-themed version "Hunny Bunt" where you get to kick that bear's a**?

SiSSYFiGHT 2000 - Today's Time Waster

sissyfight 2000
You can say this one is for the ladies, but I find boys like to play as well. SissyFight 2000 has been around for a while now, but still enjoys a moderate amount of success. You play a little girl on the playground, and your goal is to tease, scratch, grab, and in general humiliate and attack other little girls for fame, glory, and I guess some sort of sick sense of satisfaction (how's that for alliteration)... Political incorrectness aside, this can be a very fun game, and it integrates a social aspect. See, you can like, totally gang up on one girl with your little friends! It's so much easier to tease the new girl than take the top spot, ya know, lol! Anyway, SissyFight 2000 requires the Shockwave plugin, and is made by Gamelab, who will be relaunching themselves soon as they morph into a game publisher... You can read more about Gamelab's cool new direction in their press release.

The World's Hardest Game 2.0 - Time Waster

So, just how good at time waster games are you? Think you've got the stuff? Well, The World's Hardest Game 2.0 doesn't think you do. Yes, amazingly, it's possible to have a sequel to a game called "The World's Hardest Game". It doesn't seem logically possible, since if the first one was actually the world's hardest, how could another one come along and share the moniker? It made me doubt the name in the first place. That is, until I tried the game. The mechanics of the game are very simple. You are a small red square, ...
