Jailbroken iPhones in Australia getting Rickrolled by a worm

If the possibility of having your jailbroken iPod Touch or iPhone held ransom for 5 Euros wasn't enough of a scare to make you change your root password, maybe this will. Users on an Australian forum site are reporting a new attack - one that's no stranger to love.

You guessed it, the newest attack on jailbroken devices is a wallpaper Rickroll. Along with Rick Astley's devilishly handsome headshot, the image also includes the message "ikee is never gonna give you up."

It's actually a pretty tame attack. There are no reports in the forum of sounds being replaced with that all-to-familiar opening verse or repeated, mind-numbing video assaults.

At least one variation has also popped up. In addition to Astley, one user commented that his image had been changed to a New England Patriots logo.

The moral of the story?

If you jailbreak your iPhone or iPod Touch, make sure you change the root password to something other than alpine so you can avoid the shenanigans.

New app monitors µTorrent from your jailbroken iPhone or iPod Touch

Sure, you can just use Safari and µTorrent's built-in WebUI to monitor your torrents - and you'll have to if you're not the swashbuckling, jailbreaking type. Those of you who don't mind getting a little colored snow on your iPhone or iPod Touch, however, can use µMonitor.

Rejected from the App Store, the developer has decided to do an end run around Apple and release µMonitor via Cydia.
The app actually taps into the µTorrent WebUI API to work its magic. The end result is a solid mobile interface which makes controlling your torrent downloads from your iPhone a breeze.

You'll need to add repo.theiphonebay.org to your Cydia sources if it's not there already -- they're taking care of µMonitor's distribution. You may also want to sign up for a dynamic DNS service like DynDNS.org to give your machine a fixed address to access even if your ISP frequently cycles your IP address (like mine does).

Cydia creator releases tracking opt-out for jailbroken iPods and iPhones

Opened Cydia on your jailbroken iPod Touch or iPhone today? If so, you probably noticed an item on the front page about PrivaCy "Opt-Out."

Recently there's been a lot of talk about app developers like Pinch Media harvesting analytics from users of their applications. There are plenty of good reasons for them to do this -- such as learning how to make their applications better.

Still, some people aren't too keen on this kind of tracking. So Pinch contacted Cydia's Jay Freeman to address the situation. Freeman and BigBoss together contacted the three other providers -- Flurry, Medialets, and Mobclix. In his words, they "not only [gave] their blessing, but also their technical expertise in disabling their systems.

After installing PrivaCy, you'll see a new option in your settings screen. Tap it, and the screen above appears. Opting out is as simple toggling on/off.

Who knows, maybe some day Apple will allow a similar toggle for users of non-jailbroken devices. Feel free to weigh in on that thought in the comments.

The World's Hardest Game 2.0 - Time Waster

So, just how good at time waster games are you? Think you've got the stuff? Well, The World's Hardest Game 2.0 doesn't think you do. Yes, amazingly, it's possible to have a sequel to a game called "The World's Hardest Game". It doesn't seem logically possible, since if the first one was actually the world's hardest, how could another one come along and share the moniker? It made me doubt the name in the first place. That is, until I tried the game. The mechanics of the game are very simple. You are a small red square, ...
