Yahoo's student design expo innovationsThe future of the web saw the light at Yahoo's recent Design Expo. The event which was held last week saw some interesting takes on innovation and creativity focused on the theme of Design + Build.

Guy Kawasaki to speak online at the Microsoft Small Business Summit

Small business owners and hopefuls have a full schedule ahead of them next week, as the Microsoft Small Business Summit kicks off Monday with online and in-person sessions at Microsoft's Redmond, WA campus. Among the speaking lineup that includes Kevin Turner (Microsoft's own COO) is the venerable Guy Kawasaki, a venture capitalist, author on and evangelist of all things technology and small business that our own sister site TUAW had a chance to interview back in January.

This Small Business Summit appears to cover the gamut of topics on a small business' table, and we aren't just talking about which version of Vista is best for your garage full of Mountain Dew-infused employees. Guy's session is titled The Art of Innovation, while other speakers will cover everything from the importance of branding to whether you need a server and even how to build a solid marketing strategy.

If these topics haven't caught the attention of the small business owner in you, there has to be something else in the 5 days of sessions that can tickle your bottom line. Besides, every session, whether online or in person, is powered by the best word of all in the business world: free.

Google CEO joins Apple Board of Directors

eric schmidt joins apples board of directorsApple announced yesterday that Google CEO Eric Schmidt has joined the ranks on Apple's Board of Directors. "Apple is one of the companies in the world that I most admire," said Eric Schmidt. "I'm really looking forward to working with Steve and Apple's board to help with all of the amazing things Apple is doing." Likewise, Steve Jobs praised Schmidt, saying, "Eric is obviously doing a terrific job as CEO of Google, and we look forward to his contributions as a member of Apple's board of directors."

Just imagine the outcomes in the marketplace now that these extra ties have been made between Google and Apple. These two companies full of innovation and market domination can together create some very cutting edge products and services--I wonder what Microsoft thinks about this news.

The most important software innovations ever

The Most Important Software InnovationsAjax may be the coolest thing since sliced arrays (*ducks*), but in the grand scheme of things it doesn't really compare to many of the things on David A. Wheeler's list of The Most Important Software Innovations. The updated-for-2006 list spans more than 150 years, from the birth of software (with Babbage's Analytical Engine in 1837) to the first compiler in 1952 to the spreadsheet in 1978 and so on. After his timeline, Wheeler takes a few moments to talk about software patents ("Software patents have essentially no relationship to software innovation.") and what makes an innovation important and what doesn't. Overall, an educational and, if you're a history-of-computing geek like me, entertaining read.

Web 2.0 Innovation Map

Web 2.0 Innovation MapEvery wonder where all the much-hyped Web 2.0 innovation is happening? Well, me neither, but Web Things Considered's Ryan Williams did and created the Web 2.0 Innovation Map, a Google Maps map that shows the base of operations for more than 200 cutting-edge web apps. It's pretty much U.S.-centric, but if you want to know if there's a Web 2.0 company hiding in your back yard, this is a good way to find out.

The World's Hardest Game 2.0 - Time Waster

So, just how good at time waster games are you? Think you've got the stuff? Well, The World's Hardest Game 2.0 doesn't think you do. Yes, amazingly, it's possible to have a sequel to a game called "The World's Hardest Game". It doesn't seem logically possible, since if the first one was actually the world's hardest, how could another one come along and share the moniker? It made me doubt the name in the first place. That is, until I tried the game. The mechanics of the game are very simple. You are a small red square, ...
