Blip.fm partners hits speedbumps, partners with imeem

Blip.fm
Blip.fm is sort of like Twitter for music. Instead of telling people what you're doing or thinking about in 140 characters or less, you can tell your contacts what you're listening to. Oh yeah, the site also features an integrated music search engine and media player that lets you find and listen to the songs you're talking about or listen to your friends' playlists.

In other words, like 90% of the other web based music startups (that's a totally made up figure, by the way), Blip.fm was kind of lawsuit-bait. So it shouldn't be surprising to see that the company has made a few changes, including a partnership with music social netowrking site imeem.

Starting this week, all music available through Blip.fm is actually streaming from imeem. And that means you only get access to free and legal music. Unless you're outside of the US, in which case you probably won't be able to stream songs at all. International users can still let people know what they're listening to via short messages, but they won't be able to use Blip.fm as a music player.

It also means that old blips will be replaced with content available from imeem where possible. But if you were sharing links to music from artists that aren't in the imeem catalog, those blips will stop working.

Blip.fm is working on additional partnerships, so the media catalog could grow in time, and there may be hope for international users. But for now, it sounds like Blip.fm is going through a pretty rocky period.

Evite goes 2.0

invitationAt some point you've probably used evite, either by receiving or sending an invitation. In the past the online application was great for sending invitations but it was a one shot deal - create and send an evite and when the event is over, the evite is dead.

Last year evite went mobile in an effort to keep up with all of us and on Friday, evite went 2.0. Users can now integrate photos from Flickr, videos from YouTube and playlists from Imeem. The changes should make it easier to integrate content you already have on the web into your evite options instead of requiring separate uploads of information.

The redesign also attempts to make evite easier to navigate, introducing more tabs for organizing different sections of the site. Developers have also added some custom options for the way hosts and attendees can interact with each other.

Download Internet radio tracks with Free Music Zilla

Free Music Zilla
There's no shortage of applications that let you save audio streams from internet services ranging from Shoutcast to Pandora. And well, Free Music Zilla is another one of those applications.

What sets Free Music Zilla apart from some of the competitors in this space is that it's 100% free, and incredibly easy to use. Just install the application and it will hang out in your system tray. When you visit a site with streaming audio like Pandora, Last.fm, IMEEM, MySpace, eSnips, or several others, Free Music Zilla will give you the option of saving each song.

While the program officially works with all the web services mentioned above plus a few more, we've found that it also does a pretty good job of catching songs from unsupported web sites like the recently launched MeeMix.

The only thing that would make Free Music Zilla better would be automatic file naming. Right now, any track you download will have a string of numbers for a name, so you'll have to tag and name files on your own. Of course, we don't have to tell you that in many situations, using programs like this to download streaming audio may be illegal. But we can also think of plenty of instances when you might want to use a program like Free Music Zilla to download public domain music or songs licensed under Creative Commons.

Listen Up! Entire Warner music and video catalog - FREE on imeem

imeem and Warner Music Group launched a historic partnership today with the release of Warner's entire music and video catalog available to imeem users in North America for interactive, on-demand streaming on imeem's free, ad-supported service. imeem is a social network where users share content and discover new blogs, photos, music and video.

This is an apparent about face as Warner had sued imeem as recently as mid-May for copyright infringement. With this new partnership, Warner agrees to drop the lawsuit and In return receives a cut of imeem's ad revenue.

Below is a widget from imeem featuring Warner artist the Red Hot Chili Peppers' song "Under the Bridge, " which can be played freely.

Warner's impressive line of artists include: Madonna, Linkin Park, Green Day, Josh Groban, Faith Hill, My Chemical Romance, Big & Rich, John Adams, Shawn Colvin, Jaheim, Cher, Red Hot Chili Peppers, R.E.M., Seal, Blake Shelton, the Flaming Lips, Eric Clapton, Hot Hot Heat, Damien Rice, The Used, Joshua Redman, Michael Bublé, Chris Isaak, Robert Randolph, Steely Dan, Trapt, Fleetwood Mac, Emmylou Harris, Brad Mehldau, Goo Goo Dolls, Tom Petty, as well as Alanis Morissette, Michelle Branch and the Deftones.

With similar arrangements from major labels with YouTube for ad supported access, perhaps this marks the beginning of the end of protracted lawsuits and ushering in a new era of ad supported media.

The World's Hardest Game 2.0 - Time Waster

So, just how good at time waster games are you? Think you've got the stuff? Well, The World's Hardest Game 2.0 doesn't think you do. Yes, amazingly, it's possible to have a sequel to a game called "The World's Hardest Game". It doesn't seem logically possible, since if the first one was actually the world's hardest, how could another one come along and share the moniker? It made me doubt the name in the first place. That is, until I tried the game. The mechanics of the game are very simple. You are a small red square, ...
