Ubuntu Brainstorm: Vote on the Ubuntu features you'd like to see

Ubuntu Brainstorm
What's wrong with Ubuntu? No, that's not a rhetorical question. The developers behind the popular open-source Linux distribution are soliciting feedback using a Digg-like forum called Ubuntu Brainstorm. Anyone can submit an idea, and other users can vote a story up or down. The top suggestions are then showed on the front page of the site, bringing them more attention.

The concept is based on Dell's IdeaStorm web site, which the computer maker uses to solicit ideas. Right now, some of the top suggestions for Ubuntu are:
  • A better interface for managing network connections
  • Use less power
  • Combine the Preferences and Administration menus and condense some of the submenus
  • Let users know which application is using a volume that cannot be unmounted because it's in use
  • A prettier bootloader
  • Quicker boot speed
And the list goes on. What would you fix in Ubuntu if you had the chance?

HP - Linux for the desktop tipping point?

Well, it seems HP's order fulfillment for enterprise Linux desktop systems is so massive, (multi-thousand units) they are considering offering factory loaded Linux on PC's. The numbers may represent a trend that market demand and mainstream acceptance of Linux is here.

We previously reported evidence of this when the number one consumer comment on Dell's Idea Storm website was having Linux pre-installed on Dell PC's. Dell launched Idea Storm to get consumer feedback to help get its sales back on course.

Clearly, HP is attuned to the market demand for open source and attributes $25 million in hardware sales for its support of the Debian distribution in its Europe, Middle East and African market, (see HP: Debian Cha Ching!). It's never been a question of when brand name PC's come pre-loaded with Linux, but more a question of who will be the first to lead the way.

Social voting with Dell Ideastorm

dell ideastormThe social voting scene has been a proven winner with Digg starting it all off, and many other websites entering the mix. With Microsoft recently jumping on it as well with sites focusing on Norwegian and Belgian content, could there be a new shift towards social voting sites built by market leading companies? It appears Dell thinks so.

Dell recently launched their Ideastorm site. The website allows users to post new product or service ideas for Dell. Users vote, or promote in this case, the interesting ideas that they would like Dell to investigate further. Comments and ideas can be dropped on the posts and a discussion can take place. Later resulting in Dell planning out a delivery of the results from suggestions.

Social voting is an emerging way to offer feedback. It can be tiresome to write long letters of suggestions and feedback to a company when you find yourself dissatisfied with a product or service they offer. Scanning a list and voting or commenting on issues which have already been identified by others is a new and interesting way to improve customer communication. Do DLS readers think this could improve Dell's lingering customer support issues?

Graveyard Shift - zombie-busting Time Waster

With Halloween fast approaching, it's a great time to get in some practice defending your territory against zombies. In Graveyard Shift, you take aim at zombies and other creepy-crawlies, blasting them into splatters of cartoony green guts. It's a casual first-person shooter, and it's very easy to get the hang of - use the mouse to aim, click to fire. Graveyard Shift has at least 15 levels, and it might even have some secret stages I haven't unlocked yet. They key to getting good at Graveyard Shift is learning to use ...
