PandoraBox provides alternate App Store view on iPhone

PandoraBoxPandoraBox [iTunes link] is like a free alternative iTunes App Store for iPhone apps. Probably its most remarkable feature is that it helps you find iPhone apps that are on sale, something that the iPhone's App Store oddly neglects to do.

It can tell you about apps that are temporarily free, or ones that have been discounted. It also contains tabs for Featured apps, New Apps, Favorites, and a More tab which takes you to a page that has Search and Settings tabs.

Favorites is useful if you want to keep an eye on an app and nab it if and when it goes on sale. For example, I'm not much of a football fan, but I'll watch Madden 2010 and if it drops to 1/2 price, I'll probably pick it up.

If you're an Android user, similar functionality can be found in an app called AndroidStats, which gives you "yesterday's price changes", and "biggest weekly movers" lists.

Flickr releases slick new iPhone app

So Yahoo has finally given the iPhone a hearty high five for being the most popular camera on Flickr and produced a native Flickr app.

There's not a heck of a lot to it, but you probably wouldn't expect there to be, really. After all, you're probably on Flickr to either upload and share photos or look at what other people have submitted. The app does both of those things pretty well.

For added sizzle, if you leave Flickr idle on your iPhone, a nice slideshow of Creative Commons licensed images will pan and zoom around your screen.

Searches return 40 thumbnails, and about 16 fit on the iPhone's screen at once. Tap one to zoom and and view details like tags, the number of views, and where and when images where taken.

Comments load inline below the image and you can, of course, tap the talk bubble icon to add your own thoughts.

Viewing your contact's items is an even better experience, with buttons provided to display set and tag views as well as their favorite images. The initial display can also be swapped between thumbnails only or image with titles and view/comment stats.

If speed is your thing, stick to the Flickr mobile web interface in Safari. It's definitely speedier.

However, if you prefer a more dynamic visual experience, then download Flickr from the App Store [App Store Link].

Tumblrette becomes Tumblr for iPhone

You may remember Tumblrette as the fantastic Tumblr iPhone application I told you about way back in November. It was (and remains) a super-slick and stylish way for iPhone users to post to Tumblr, however today the folks at Tumblr have announced they've bought Tumblrette: and made it their own free "Tumblr for iPhone" application [App Store Link].

Not content with setting the application free (though its original $1.99 price was hardly bank-breaking), the folks at Tumblr have also added support for the iPhone-style Tumblr Dashboard and a bookmarklet so that you can easily post links right from the iPhone's Safari browser.

The ever-slick (and now free) application is available in an AppStore near you!

Share lists with Zenbe Lists iPhone app

Zenbe Lists iPhone appMy wife and I both have iPhones, and we want to be able to share grocery and honey-do lists with each other. Most task list applications are not very well-suited to sharing lists, and most of the web solutions we tried were not much better. But then we came across Zenbe Lists (iTunes link), which is an iPhone application that synchronizes with a web-based version. But even better, Zenbe Lists allows you to share your lists with other Zenbe Lists users.

Voila, my wife and I can share a few simple lists, and now when I'm on my way home from work and need to stop at the store, I can quickly check to see what we need and pick it up. Rather than a list pinned to the fridge that is never with you when you need it, it's right in my pocket (and her's) all the time.

Instapaper iPhone app

Instapaper for iPhoneWe first mentioned Instapaper back in January of this year. Back then it was certainly an interesting tool, but one of many. Now, with the introduction of an Instapaper iPhone application (iTunes links), this site has gone from "interesting tool" to "must-have utility".

Like other read-it-later type bookmarking tools, Instapaper lets you use a bookmarklet to flag articles that you'd like to read later, then gives you a web-based interface to go back and find those articles. The Instapaper iPhone app goes one further - it syncrhronizes offline copies of your saved articles so that you can read them even when you're not online.

Instapaper comes in both free and pro versions on the iPhone. The free version has met my needs perfectly so far, but I imagine if I was to go on a long flight, I would pony up the $10 for the full version, as the free version only synchronizes 10 or so articles at a time.

[Update]
Marco, the developer of Instapaper for the iPhone, chimed in in the comments to let me know that I was mistaken about the 10 article limit. I just re-tested on my copy, and sure enough there are 24 articles in there right now. My apologies, and thanks for letting me know, Marco!

Graveyard Shift - zombie-busting Time Waster

With Halloween fast approaching, it's a great time to get in some practice defending your territory against zombies. In Graveyard Shift, you take aim at zombies and other creepy-crawlies, blasting them into splatters of cartoony green guts. It's a casual first-person shooter, and it's very easy to get the hang of - use the mouse to aim, click to fire. Graveyard Shift has at least 15 levels, and it might even have some secret stages I haven't unlocked yet. They key to getting good at Graveyard Shift is learning to use ...
