AutoBrake simplifies DVD ripping on your HTPC

Handbrake is easily one of the best DVD ripping applications available for any platform. It's great when you've got a keyboard and mouse handy to click all the necessary buttons, but what about your home theatre PC? Wouldn't it be nice to just drop in a disc and watch it automatically ripped to the hard drive?

AutoBrake does exactly that. Set your options, drop in a disc, and AutoBrake takes care of the rest - just wait for your DVD to eject. Discs can be ripped as AVI, MP4, or MKV files at six preset quality levels. Two-pass encoding is supported with h.264.

The usual DVD ripping caveats apply - you'll need a separate program to handle the decryption duties when archiving a fair-use copy of protected discs you own.

AutoBrake is a free download for Windows only, and requires you have Handbrake installed (of course).

Just to let you know, the DLS crew had troubles getting this to work on several Windows versions including Vista x64 and Windows 7 32 and 64-bit. If you can get it working, though, it's..Just...Plain...Awesome.

HandBrake now encodes any video file, not just DVDs

HandBrake
HandBrake is a cross-platform utility for ripping and encoding DVDs in high quality, compressed video formats including XviD and H.264. And the latest version of HandBrake lets you use the powerful application to encode any video file, no DVD required.

There are a handful of other changes as well, including a GUI for the Linux version, improved video quality, and more control over audio tracks. Queued jobs are also saved to your disk so that if Handbrake crashes, you'll be able to recover the list of queued jobs without starting from scratch.

HandBrake 0.9.3 is available for Windows, Linux, and OS X with Intel and PPC versions available for OS X 10.5.

RealNetworks to launch DVD ripper, complete with DRM

RatDVD
RealNetworks, makers of RealPlayer and the company that brought you the Rhapsody subscription music service are expected to announced a new product called RealDVD today. What's RealDVD? It's a DVD ripper. But unlike most DVD rippers available today, RealDVD makes a complete copy of a disc right down to the menus, alternate audio tracks, and special features. Oh yeah, and the software only lets you play that copy on a single computer thanks to some heavy-handed DRM.

There is a way around this restriction. You can transfer the file to up to 5 additional Windows PCs by purchasing up to 5 additional software licenses at $20 a pop. The first license will cost you around $30.

Of course, there are plenty of other applications that let you rip movies for free. And they don't add DRM. A few of my favorites are:
Technically it's illegal to use the aforementioned apps to rip commercial DVDs. But if you plan to make a backup of your movie collection for viewing on your PC and don't plan to distribute those movies on the internet, odds are nobody will come banging down your door. And you don't need to pay $20 if you buy a new computer and want to move your collection from one PC to the next.

DVD to iPod minus the aggravation

In the intervening months since we last took a look at the fabulous DVD-ripping tool Handbrake (for Mac, Windows, and Linux), the studios have gotten wise to the "lawful use" of the little silver platters they sell at Wal-Mart and upped the ante on rippers. It seems there's a newer protection scheme that does indeed stop Handbrake from ripping the video content on certain DVDs so you can package it for your iPod.

Granted, Handbrake's developers state that the best way to use their program is by supplying it with unprotected video files to begin with. And that's the trick.

The answer is the new beta of MacTheRipper (3.0), which offers a workaround for this new technique. Once you've nabbed a rip using MacTheRipper, Handbrake will grab the ripped video files from your hard disk and package them into a MPEG-4 or AAC format that's perfect for your video iPod, iPhone, or for on-the-go viewing on your laptop. Now MacTheRipper is freeware, but you'll need to contribute to the developers' coffers if you want to get the 3.0 beta at this point. When you do, let 'em know Download Squad sent you.

HandBrake DVD ripping app ported to Windows

HandBrakePopular open source DVD ripping app HandBrake has been available for Mac and  Linux for some time now, and has finally been ported to Windows. HandBrake is a slick all-in-one ripping app that will encode your ripped video in MPEG-4 or H.264 (MP4, AVI, or OGM) and has a great built-in calculator that takes the fuss out of choosing a bitrate, which is especially great if your video's destination is an iPod or PSP. Hit the HandBrake forums to get the Windows release.

So what's the deal with the logo? The FAQ says "don't ask."

The World's Hardest Game 2.0 - Time Waster

So, just how good at time waster games are you? Think you've got the stuff? Well, The World's Hardest Game 2.0 doesn't think you do. Yes, amazingly, it's possible to have a sequel to a game called "The World's Hardest Game". It doesn't seem logically possible, since if the first one was actually the world's hardest, how could another one come along and share the moniker? It made me doubt the name in the first place. That is, until I tried the game. The mechanics of the game are very simple. You are a small red square, ...
