Dellbuntu 7.10: Dell updates its pre-loaded Linux PC offerings

Dellbuntu If you go shopping for a new computer the day after Microsoft or Apple announces an updated version of their operating systems, good luck finding a model with the older operating system. But while Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon has been out for 2 months, Dell is just starting to offer computers running Ubuntu 7.10.

Don't get us wrong, for the most part, we're just happy to see that Dell is still offering PCs with Linux preloaded. The company started offering computers with Ubuntu 7.04 earlier this year. Dell is also selling workstations running Red Hat's Enterprise Linux version 5.

Ubuntu 7.10 is already available to US customers who order an Inspiron 530 desktop or Inspiron 1420 notebook. Customers in England, France, and Germany will be able to get Ubuntu 7.10 on Inspiron 530 notebooks later this week.

Of course, if you've got a Dell PC that's running Ubuntu 7.04, (or practically any other computer for that matter) you can always just download and install Ubuntu 7.10 on your own. Linux users should be able to grab the update through Ubuntu's update manager, while new Linux users can download a liveCD installation disc from Ubuntu. But it's always nice to get a machine that's designed with your operating system in mind, rather than hoping that your operating system will run well on your chosen machine.

Install Ubuntu 7.10 on a PS3 so you can play Super Mario 2

Ubuntu with video player
Sure, that expensive Playstation3 video game console in your living room can play DVDs, Blu-Ray discs, downloaded videos, and video games with killer graphics. But haven't you always wanted to install some old-school Nintendo and Atari games on there? OK, we're seriously hoping that's not the only thing you do if you decide to load Linux onto your PS3, but it's one of the many possibilities once you have a fully functional computer operating system on your game system.

The folks over at SoftPedia have put together step by step instructions for installing Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon on a PS3. The best thing is, you can install Ubuntu without removing your PS3's native operating system, meaning you'll be able to choose between playing video games and using your game console as a multimedia-friendly computer.

You'll need a USB flash drive (or hard drive), a USB keyboard, and an installer CD. Oh yeah, and a lot of time on your hands. Installation takes about 4 times longer on a PS3 than on a typical PC. You'll also probably want an HDTV if you plan on using your PS3 to do any serious computing. Otherwise you'll be stuck with an extraordinarily low screen resolution that makes it hard to fit more than one window on your screen.

Mark Shuttleworth talks Ubuntu 7.10

Tracker
Canonical is set to ship Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon on Thursday. The latest version of the popular Linux distribution packs a bunch of new features, including:
  • Integrated desktop search with Tracker
  • Streamlined Firefox add-on support
  • Read/write access to Windows partitions by default
  • 3D desktop effects are enabled by default on systems that meet the minimum requirements.
  • AppArmor security
  • Improved printer support (Shuttleworth says they're getting closer to being able to say that if your printer works with OS X it will work with Ubuntu)
Ubuntu founder Mark Shuttleworth held a conference call with reporters today in advance of the October 18th release. The sound got a little funky during the Q & A portion, so here's a recording of Shuttleworth's presentation followed by a few notes from the Q & A.

First off, our favorite part of the audio clip is about 12 and a half minutes in, when Shuttleworth refers to 3D desktop effects as "bling."

A few other notes:
  • Canonical estimates that there are about 6 million Ubuntu users today.
  • A number of smaller internet companies have begun using Ubuntu Server as their backbone, including Joost.
The roadmap for Ubuntu 8.04 will be determined at the Ubuntu Development Summit in Boston later this month.

Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon reaches beta

Ubuntu 7.10 display propertiesWith Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon due out in just a few weeks, Canonical has released the first beta of the next generation of the popular Linux distribution.

We told you about most of the new features in Ubuntu 7.10 when discussing the alpha release. But the beta label implies a bit more stability as well as a few new enhancements. Here are a few updates since the release of Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn:
  • Read/write support for NTFS partitions
  • Lower power consumption
  • Improved thin-client support
  • Graphical interface for adjusting monitor settings
  • Automatic printer installation
  • Improved Firefox plugin finder
  • Desktop search
You can download Ubuntu 7.10 as a LiveCD or you can upgrade from Ubuntu 7.04. We'd probably recommend holding off on the upgrade option until the full release on October 18.

Graveyard Shift - zombie-busting Time Waster

With Halloween fast approaching, it's a great time to get in some practice defending your territory against zombies. In Graveyard Shift, you take aim at zombies and other creepy-crawlies, blasting them into splatters of cartoony green guts. It's a casual first-person shooter, and it's very easy to get the hang of - use the mouse to aim, click to fire. Graveyard Shift has at least 15 levels, and it might even have some secret stages I haven't unlocked yet. They key to getting good at Graveyard Shift is learning to use ...
