Google vs. Yahoo mashups

google vs yahooSearch wars are on, mashup style. Google and Yahoo go head to head and compare mapping and search results in these two beautiful mashups.

Gahooyoogle pits both of the major search engine results, displaying them side by side for comparison. Some of the search results were shocking. For instance, with a search of "Google", I was shocked at some of the differences. For instance, Yahoo directed me to search using Yahoo as the first result, while searching for "Yahoo" in both browsers displayed proper search results in Google. In the image search category, Yahoo displayed no images for the recently unveiled "blackberry pearl 8100", while Google images were overloaded with them.

Sergey Chernyshev built a little tool that puts both Yahoo and Google maps together. They are pretty much similar; however, I feel that Google has cleaner lines. What I like about searching in Google maps is that they have so nicely added major areas such as schools, museums, and local landmarks. Sergey's site nicely displays the actual mapping co-ordinates as well. A nice use of the Yahoo, and Google mapping API's.

Google fan aside and seeing results side by side, I think it's safe to say that Google outweighs Yahoo in both search and map results.

Google adds malware warnings to search results

google search warningGoogle has recently added malware advisories to search results. When results are clicked on, Google directs users to a Warning page, where Google announces that the site you are about to visit might not be suitable.

One particular instance is when "list keygen mirc" is searched. If users click on the first entry in the search results, they are directed to a Google Warning page, letting them know that the site they are about to visit may harm their computer. Google then gives the opportunity to click into the site, or perform another search.

It looks like Google is also helping users protect themselves by directing users to StopBadware.org, A neighborhood watch site dedicated to fighting badware. The StopBadware site also helps users detect, and get rid of malware they might have installed on their computers.

Google mobile 3D search

google mobile 3d search
Imagine walking down the street, and whoa, all of a sudden you're really not sure where you are, so you pull out your magic Google Mobile search stick, take a picture, and Google provides you with your exact coordinates. Now say you are shopping at the local Best Buy and you want to see if some other store has that iPod accessory listed cheaper. Take a picture and Google checks their database and lets you know where you can get it cheaper. Now you are are out on the town with your girl, and you really want to impress her. Take a picture of that nice high priced restaurant to see if it's any good, and Google hand your back some customer ratings.

Wouldn't that kind of tool be great? It's another device to carry around, but the time saved could be phenomenal! Unfortunately, it's not a real product. It's a concept which won an HSBC Innovation Award for designer NG Pei Kang. No it's not real, but he did put some nice thought and pretty drawings together. I wonder if he pitched Google on the idea?

[Thanks, David!]

Google Platypus Mass Storage

Google PlatypusThere was talk of a Google GDrive in the works a while ago. It was said to be some kind of mass storage area for user to store whatever they wanted, and be able to access it from anywhere.

Enter Platypus. Philipp Lenssen got some news about this possible new service, with an archived version from Corsin, who thankfully made a backup of what he came across. Corsin came across this page by doing some URL typing.

Google's Platypus Gdrive has the tagline of "A filer for the whole world. But better." Platypus enables you to store files on your C drive of on the filer.

If your computer crashes, or you get a new one, you can reinstall this Platypus software, and you files will be automatically downloaded and synched onto your new machine.

You can Sync files across many different computers, and operating systems.

You can view your files across the web.

You can share certain files to multiple people.

If you are not able to get an internet connection, all of your files are still available.

It is also said that this new Platypus application will be available in Windows, Mac and Linux formats. Word is that Justin Rosenstein, the Product Manager for the Google Page Creator is working on this project as well.

There is no official news as to what this application is, and to whether it is truly in development at Google, but we will be keeping our eyes open for this very interesting one. Interestingly enough, Google has called itself "The Platypus of the Internet".

Is Google really a Cult?

You might think so given its numerous hardcore followers. Like me. That is just one of the many mysterious surrounding Google.

Many people thrive, and live daily on Google's search platform, and many product offerings like Google Earth, Google Maps and Gmail. They do nothing but speak the many praises of what Google is doing for the world, and wait, rather impatiently, for the next new upcoming beta release for that new Google offering.

I don't know if this is an upside from the eyes of Google, or not, seeing as how the majority of its cash comes from its advertising platform, and not its t-shirt sales, but Andrew Orlowski asks the question about whether Google is a cult or corporation? He is having difficulties deciding, and came to the conclusion that Google may seem to have a cult like following. They even hire individuals into the company that have a cult like mentality, and do nothing but praise Google, and obey its every word.

With all of Google's loyal followers, I don't think we have any worries of this ship sinking anytime soon. Google, and its cult following are in it for the long run.

Google Search for Girls

Google Search for GirlsAre you a girl? A girl that loves searching? Better yet, a girl that loves searching on Google? Why not try Girgle?

Ok, so there is nothing new as far as search technology goes here. Girgle is really just a pretty landing page for the AdSense search tool. I might not even call it a pretty landing page with its malformed heart shape thingy. The developer might have something, but they might want to spend a bit more time making it at least appear a little prettier.

Thanks to Nathan for spotting this site!
