Gentoo to celebrate tenth birthday with new live DVD

Venerable Linux distro Gentoo will hit the decade mark this December, and they're celebrating the milestone with a new live DVD release.

Born as Enoch Linux in 1999, the distribution has slipped a bit in popularity over the years, yet it still provides a solid foundation for other distros. Like Debian was supplanted by Ubuntu, Sabayon - which is Gentoo-based - maintains a spot in the top ten on Distrowatch.

The anniversary build will be the first (and likely only) Gentoo release of 2009. A sneak peak of the release is already available via the US and EU mirrors for those who want to check it out now. As Phoronix points out, there aren't yet any 10th anniversary customizations in the snapshot builds. You'll just be getting a look at the current default packages for now.

The best Linux distro ever: the results

UbuntuWow, I am pretty blown away. Almost unanimously everyone said that Ubuntu is the best Linux distro for almost everything you would want to do. I am already a Ubuntu fan, and I thought there would be a huge list of distros because there are so many out there. Ubuntu is the distro I used at work to recover old PC data, and fix PCs when even windows was trashed. It is definitely a killer build and deserves all the recognition it gets. If anyone out there is wondering which Linux distro is good for your uses, this should be proof enough. Other distros that made the list, but were all soundly spanked by Ubuntu are:
Thanks to everyone for your comments and thoughts on your favorite Linux flavor. I will be awarding stars as soon as I can, but I believe that feature is down at the moment.

Screenshot tour of Gentoo Linux 2006.0

Gentoo
2006.0Monday saw the release of Gentoo Linux 2006.0. I really like Gentoo's version naming scheme. The new version boasts all the upgrades you'd expect, including KDE 3.4.3 and Gnome 2.12.2, and a 2.6.15 kernel. The new version can be installed from a LiveCD and OSDir.com has a nice bunch of screenshots of the install process. It looks pretty slick.

Gentoo founder leaves Microsoft

MicrosoftAccording to ZDNet UK, Gentoo Linux founder and lead developer Daniel Robbins has quit his job at Microsoft, having been with the company only eight months. Robbins, who worked in an "educational" role in Microsoft's Linux and Open Source Lab, says he left due to frustration over being unable to use all of his technical skills in Redmond. He's accepted a job as CTO of ABC Coding Solutions in his home town of Albuquerque. Chris Gianelloni, Gentoo's release engineering lead, says the Gentoo project will be unaffected by Robbins' move.

The World's Hardest Game 2.0 - Time Waster

So, just how good at time waster games are you? Think you've got the stuff? Well, The World's Hardest Game 2.0 doesn't think you do. Yes, amazingly, it's possible to have a sequel to a game called "The World's Hardest Game". It doesn't seem logically possible, since if the first one was actually the world's hardest, how could another one come along and share the moniker? It made me doubt the name in the first place. That is, until I tried the game. The mechanics of the game are very simple. You are a small red square, ...
