Figure out how much gas money you need with Cost To Drive

Cost To Drive
Planning a road trip in the near future? Cost To Drive is a web application that can help you figure out how much cash to take out of the ATM before you hit the road. Sure, you could certainly get a rough estimate by dividing the number of miles you have to drive by your car's average mileage and then multiplying that figure by the average price of gas. But where's the fun in that?

Cost To Drive lets you select from a long list of automobile makes and models dating back to 1999. Just select your car from the list, plug in the locations for the start and end of your trip, and the web site will spit out an estimate of how much gas money you'll burn through. The figure is obtained by looking at the mpg for your car and the average price of gas in various spots along your route.

Simple but powerful Drivepricing helps calculate gas costs

Drive PricingSometimes the best web services are the simplest ones. Drivepricing lets you calculate the cost of gas for your road trip.

With gas prices so high its nice to be able to know how much to put in the piggy bank to save up for the trips you have coming up this summer.

So when you're going to visit grandma in Albany from Philly, you can drop your gas mileage in there and get an estimated cost of what you're going to have to beg her for so you can get home.

Even if you don't know your gas mileage they have a link to FuelEconomy.gov for you. Drop your zipcode in there, start address, end address, the type of gas you use (which is a great feature) and whether its a round trip or not.

After a few seconds of loading, booya there you have it. Price per gallon and cost for trip.

Fuelfrog: track gas mileage and cost

FuelfrogFuelfrog is a web service for tracking your gas mileage and cost-per-gallon trends which can provide insight into your empty wallet. By adding simple information each time you fill up your car, Fuelfrog will chart that data to provide a gas history.

Fuelfrog accepts updates via its website, but it also can accept data via Twitter direct message. Simply add your Twitter account to your Fuelfrog profile and Twitter the miles since your last fill up, price per gallon, and number of gallons purchased to @fuelfrog.

Someday you'll be able to log in to Fuelfrog and tell your children, "See, back in my day I only paid $4.00 for a gallon of gas!"

Get set to download some web apps for the iPhone

apple iphone applicationsNow that all the first day iPhone-ers have them up and running, (hopefully, given the backlog that occurred), The next question they might be asking is "Where can I get some applications to fill this sucker up?."

If you've spent last night and this morning tooling around on your new iPhone, have everything set up, and want to check out how some additional applications work on it, DownloadSquad is here to help.
  • Appleopolis.com - An Apple iPhone application directory. This site was created as a way to help developers and users get the best possible experience for their iPhones. The team is also working on a way for users to start an account and be able to manage all of their iPhone applications from one central location. This site has everything from Digg, Cheap gas, and LivePhone which integrates Xbox Live with the iPhone.
  • AddFone.com - This site has a directory of over 83 web applications specifically built for the iPhone, and claims to be the largest database. Its simple search interface can be accessed on mobile devices. It contains links to web apps for anything from calculators to bookmark managers to a Google Reader app.
As guessed with many of these applications, the development teams may not have had an Apple iPhone to actually test them on. So, if the apps aren't working properly, you know why. If you have made your application iPhone friendly you can also submit your site to both of these directories.

Try out iPhone apps a few weeks early

iPhone AppsCan't wait until June 29th to try out some new iPhone applications? You don't have to.

Since the iPhone's third party programs are essentially web pages that can be accessed through Safari, you can already check out some of the first applications designed for the iPhone. For example, there's already a Digg interface, a cheap gas finder, and a nifty front end for several online newspapers.

Someone's also been smart enough to snatch up the domain for iPhoneApplicationlist.com. The site is basically a blog that tracks new applications released for the iPhone. You should be able to test out most of the functions on these web-based programs using Safari or Firefox. Although they're designed for finger-navigation, they still work pretty well with a mouse and keyboard.

Gas - OS X Widget of the Day

Gas 1.0Gas prices got you down?

This widget simply called "Gas" gives you the low down on where the cheapest gas is in your town. You can view local gas stations by zip code and gas prices by grade, making it a pretty good customizable widget. One of the neatest things about Gas to me is that it links directly to Google Maps, so once you find out what station in your area has the cheapest gas, you can figure out how to get there.

With the soon to be released (so soon that I've seen it come and go off their website this morning) 3.0 version of the widget you can input information about your vehicles tank and your driving habits to determine exactly how much it would cost you to fill you tank, and how much longer you can drive on the gas you have.

The World's Hardest Game 2.0 - Time Waster

So, just how good at time waster games are you? Think you've got the stuff? Well, The World's Hardest Game 2.0 doesn't think you do. Yes, amazingly, it's possible to have a sequel to a game called "The World's Hardest Game". It doesn't seem logically possible, since if the first one was actually the world's hardest, how could another one come along and share the moniker? It made me doubt the name in the first place. That is, until I tried the game. The mechanics of the game are very simple. You are a small red square, ...
