WhoNeedsAnIphone becomes FreeStyl: Windows Mobile program launcher

FreeStylWhen we told you about GoodWin, an iPhone-like program launcher for Windows Mobile, we included a link to a similar app that we'd discovered this summer. While the $20 GoodWin is pretty, it's also a bit clunky and difficult to use. The other application, on the other hand was elegant and free. The only problem is that last time we checked, it was in Alpha, meaning it was still pretty buggy. It also kept changing its name.

Now that other program has reached public beta, and is reportedly pretty stable. Oh yeah, and it has another name. The program formerly known as WhoNeedsAniPhone and FUILauncher, is now called FreeStyl.

There's still a pretty hefty list of requirements:
FreeStyl includes a program launcher, a screen locking application, and a redesigned contacts application. Developer Jason Jaegers is also working on a weather program and a music player that will also be finger-friendly. You can also choose from several different wallpapers.

Alpha version of FUILauncher released for Windows Mobile

Who Needs an iPhoneFlash developer Jason Jaegers set about to create an iPhone-inspired (but not duplicated) program launcher for Windows Mobile. A few weeks ago he posted some pretty pictures, and this weekend he released the first public alpha for download. The working name of the program is FUILauncher, for Flash user interface.

Here's a few things you need to know:
  • You'll need Windows Mobile 5.0 or 6, Microsoft .NET Compact Framework 2.0 SP1, and the Adobe Flash Lite 2.1 player to run FUILauncher.
  • The tabs that show unread voicemail and e-mail are not yet activated.
  • There's no indicator yet for what page you're on.
  • Once you create an icon you can change it, but there's no mechanism yet for deleting it.
  • You can't yet configure the permanent buttons at the bottom of the screen.
  • And there's no easy way to stop the server process without performing a soft reset on your device.
In other words, this release is for early adopters only.
