Windows Live Sync finally gets an update for Snow Leopard

It's been a long, long wait for Snow Leopard users (myself included) who are dancing with the devil and using Microsoft's Windows Live Sync (formerly Foldershare), but Microsoft have finally announced an update for the application that resolves a long running compatibility problem with Apple's finest.

Wearing version number 14.0.8096.0903, the new release fixes a problem with internal security certificates that completely prevented Snow Leopard users from logging into their Windows Live Sync account.

Announced on the Windows Live Sync blog, the update only includes the aforementioned fix and does not include any new features - existing users who have not migrated to Snow Leopard do not need to upgrade.

I'm pleased to report that i've installed the update and it works great!

Microsoft to replace FolderShare with Windows Live Sync

FolderShare
About three years after acquiring FolderShare, a utility for synchronizing files across multiple computers, Microsoft is retiring the application and plans to replace it with a similar utility called Windows Live Sync. You could make the case that what's happening is Microsoft is renaming FolderShare rather than replacing it, as the new version will likely look a lot like FolderShare and have many of the same functions. But it will also have a few improvements including:
  • Ability to sync up to 20 folders with 20,000 files each
  • You can login with your Windows Live ID
  • Integration with the Windos Recycle Bin
  • New clients for Windows and Mac
  • Unicode support for synchronizing files in other languages (beside English)
Why Microsoft is continuing to push this software at the same time as it develops Windows Live Mesh which allows you to synchronize files across mutilple computers, the web, and mobile devices, is anyone's guess.

Microsoft updates FolderShare beta

FolderShare
Microsoft has released a major update to its FolderShare file synchronization tool. FolderShare essentially lets users synchronize files and directories between multiple computers. There are clients for Mac and PC, so you can even keep documents synchronized if you're in a mixed marriage.

In a blog post, the FolderShare team point out some of the highlights of the new release:
  • New website for easier library and computer management
  • Improved performance on Windows Vista
  • Better setup and imporved system tray
  • Backend improvements keep FolderShare running more reliably
If you've got more than one computer and you've never tried FolderShare, you should really check it out. While you could set up shared network folders on your computer the old fashioned way and then use a tool like SyncBackSE to synchronize files, FolderShare makes the whole process a lot simpler.

Windows Live Messenger public beta released

Windows Live Messenger

At long last Microsoft has opened beta-testing of Windows Live Messenger, formerly known as MSN Messenger 8, to the public. The biggest new features are Sharing Folders, the fruits of Microsoft's acquistion of FolderShare, which aims to simplify sharing photos and files with your contacts, and Windows Live Call, a pre-paid service that lets you call regular phones, a la SkypeOut, via Verizon. Also new is a simplified interface, integrated MSN Video (I'm still not sure who wants this), and a semi-customizable GUI. To get in on the beta you'll have to have a (free) Passport account, natch.

The World's Hardest Game 2.0 - Time Waster

So, just how good at time waster games are you? Think you've got the stuff? Well, The World's Hardest Game 2.0 doesn't think you do. Yes, amazingly, it's possible to have a sequel to a game called "The World's Hardest Game". It doesn't seem logically possible, since if the first one was actually the world's hardest, how could another one come along and share the moniker? It made me doubt the name in the first place. That is, until I tried the game. The mechanics of the game are very simple. You are a small red square, ...
