Flex for free

Flex for freeAdobe is reaching out to students and faculty by offering them Flex Builder 2 for free.

Adobe Flex Builder is an application for developing rich internet applications using the Flex framework. With this, developers can build intuitive interactive apps quickly. Why would Adobe be doing this? To try and gain some interest from new developers of course. Taking the lead from some fast food joints out there, hit them while at University and get them addicted, especially since some schools will begin offering Flex based training.

With retail prices sitting at $499, why not pick up a free copy for yourself if you are a student or faculty member and test your luck at application development. And hey, grab a copy for your non university friends too, it can sure make a great gift!

Dev Chair : Rebooting the web

Two weeks ago at NAB, Microsoft announced their Flash competitor, Silverlight. At that time, I was like 'blah' about it, thinking it was just another reaction from Microsoft to Adobe. But when Microsoft elaborated more about their future web development strategy at MIX07 two days ago, I was stunned just like most Microsoft developers.

CoreCLR, cross-platform .Net Framework, DLR, Silverlight, the list goes on! But what is so great about them all, you ask? Currently we have the .Net Framework with ASP.NET AJAX and a library of free components to help web developers. But despite what those web monkeys try to convince us desktop developers, web programming sucks in general, and JavaScript/CSS in particular, because we have to deal with the web browser and the messy standard(s).

NoteTag, Adobe's note-taking/blogging/bookmarking tool

NoteTagOver at Micro Persuasion, Steve Rubel writes about NoteTag, an app Adobe is working on that "allows users to capture notes during meetings and assign tasks within those notes to individuals." That sounds pretty boring by itself, but NoteTag also allows you to post those notes to a blog or bookmark them with del.icio.us. Judging from the Kiwi Project blog, it sounds like NoteTag is a proof-of-concept for some of the features in Flex 2.0, and at the Adobe Labs site you can download NoteTag's souce and build it a recent beta version of Flex Builder. Adobe Labs also has a short screencast of NoteTag in action. It's not exactly revelatory, but it does look pretty neat, if only as a demo of Flex 2.0's capabilities.

Adobe releases Flex 2 beta

Adobe FlexAdobe has released a beta version of Flex 2.0, its "complete solution for building cross-platform Rich Internet Applications within the enterprise and across the web." What the heck does that mean? Basically it's a development environment for creating Flash apps. While I'm rather skeptical of the idea of creating enterprise apps that run in Flash Player (yes, that Flash Player), I admit that Flex does look pretty cool. The IDE is based on open source gargantuan Eclipse and has built-in frameworks for rapid development. According to CNet, Adobe plans to "un-bundle" Flex and offer its components for lower prices, including a basic kit that will be available for free.

Forumwarz - a potentially offensive time waster

I pwn UAfter spending the better part of an hour on Forumwarz I still can't decide if it's just sick or if it's kind of fun. It's a bit like a car wreck on the highway. I know I shouldn't be looking but I can't quite turn away.

It's sick, it's twisted, it's the internet on it's worst level and darn it, it's kind of fun. At least for a little while.

Forumwarz is a parody role-playing game that takes place on the internet - or at least the Forumwarz version of it. Your goal is to complete missions that are given to you through a mock up of GoogleTalk called Sentrillion.

Your first "friend" is ShallowEsophagus who begins giving you missions to pwn various forums by being a troll. Depending on the character type you are assigned at start up, you have tools like drooling on the keyboard or bashing your head on the keyboard that you can use to destroy forum threads and eventually, pwn a forum.

Future missions involve buying illegal software from the Russians, pwning more difficult forums and other internet oddness.

Completing missions gives you cash, called Flezz in game, and items that you can pawn or use in other missions. The game is NOT for those easily offended. It's crass, coarse and there are frequent f-bombs in the fake chat sessions.

This is also a game for a more mature audience as it requires you to shop at the Drugs R Fun store to get various concoctions to improve your playing, engage in certain cyber activities to get more Flezz and just generally use a more adult perspective.

If you can get past that, here are the more enjoyable and time-wasting aspects.
