StudyProf flashcards for, well, studying

flashcardsIf you have a lot of studying to do, StudyProf FlashCards might be the buddy you've been looking for. The program, which has a free trial version available, allows you to create flashcards in a relatively simple environment. Give your card a title and an image or audio then virtually flip the card and place the information you are trying to learn on the back.

After making a set of cards you can file them in your card box and retrieve them and replay them, slideshow style with simple mouse clicks.

If you are studying something specific, StudyProf creators, Felling Software Development, has also created the Flashcard Archive to make it easier to download precreated sets of flashcards (though only the English to German flashcards are currently available).

Studying is never a lot of fun, but at least if your typing is better than your handwriting StudyProf gives you an alternative method to get the job done.

LearnItLists - Learn 10 words a day, get better at a foreign language

LeanItListsSome linguists say that most of the time people speaking any language only use about 1000 words. If you believe that, then you might also think that if you learned those 1000 common words, you would have a basic degree of fluency. If the idea of rote memorization and vocabulary building in this manner strikes your fancy, LearnItLists is there to help.

LearnItLists is essentially a web gadget that quizzes/flashcards you with 10 words a day in the language you would like to learn. You sign up for an account, pick your language, add it to your Google homepage (optional), and get busy memorizing. In a hundred days, doing 10 a day, you'll have your 1000 words, and be ready to rock with the best of them. Or close to it. Currently, the gadget supports about 16 languages, with more on the way (such as simplified Chinese).

The interface is clean, easy to use, and is intuitive in the way flash cards and vocab sheets are. So if you have been running from building your linguistic skills, give LearnItLists a look.

Mentalcase - Mac study tool released

MentalcaseMentalcase is a note taking tool that allows you to build study sessions out of virtual flash cards. It has both a smart-ass name, and a kick-ass interface. Basically, as you remember or come across information that you want to learn, you add it to a flash card using super quick keyboard shortcuts. Notes can be in the form of text, images, screenshots or simply URLs, and each is handled seamlessly. For example, if you want to add a photo of an object or person to a slide, simply invoke the use of your iSight camera (if you have one), and the photo is automatically take and added. Simple!

Mentalcase can be configured to automatically present lessons to the user at configurable intervals. You simply choose how often you want to be exposed to each slide on a slide-by-slide or lesson basis.

While it might seem that Mentalcase is aimed squarely at students, and it may well be, it's also a useful tool for anyone that wants to stretch their brain muscles regularly and learn everyday information more quickly. Anything that you can think of that you might want to learn, from your new cell phone number or zip code to your boss's wife's name - Mentalcase makes the case that it can help.

A free trial is available for 30 days, after which a license can be purchased for $29.
