Firefox 3.6 reaches beta stage

While it's slightly behind schedule -- having been originally slated for a mid-September release -- Firefox 3.6 has reached beta.

Version 3.6 beta RC1 is now available for download from Mozilla's servers. As Softpedia mentioned a few days ago, Mozilla is pondering an early exit for Firefox 3.5. Mozilla's Mike Beltzner stated, "It's not 100% decided yet, but if we issue a Firefox 3.6 as a minor update, then yes, we'd stop supporting the 1.9.1 branch at that time." He's referring to Gecko 1.9.1, on which Firefox 3.5 is based. 3.6 is based upon version 1.9.2 of the Gecko engine.

It may not benchmark in the same league as Google Chrome, but Firefox 3.6 certainly feels speedier. Our content management system runs more smoothly than it did for me under 3.5.3, and my go-to web apps like GMail and Seesmic are also more responsive.

A couple of features that appear in the 3.6 beta candidate: control-tab previews (as previously mentioned) and taskbar thumbnail previews on Windows 7 (not just for FF3.7 apparently).

Testers - if you've given 3.6 beta 1 a go, tell us what you think in the comments!

Firefox 3.6 to recognize if your computer is tilted

Firefox 3.6 tilt recognition
If your computer has an accelerometer in it, Firefox 3.6 will be able to detect when your computer is tilting to the left, right, front, or back.

Accelerometers serve a number of purposes in laptops and tablets. In some cases, they can be used to shut down a hard drive if your computer is falling so that less damage occurs when your laptop hits the floor. But they can also be used to add motion-sensitive controls to some applications. And starting with the next generation of the web browser, Firefox will be one of those applications.

Mozilla developer Christopher Blizzard has published a short video showing the new feature in action. Mozilla is releasing an API that allows web publishers to support the feature. Enabled web pages will be able to respond as your computer moves, allowing you to play web games with motion controls or just to rotate your screen and read web pages in portrait mode.

Support has been added for Mac, Linux, and some Lenovo Thinkpad models.

Firefox 3.6 beta coming next week

Firefox 3.6
Mozilla is set to launch the first beta version of Firefox 3.6 on Tuesday, October 13th. The next version of the popular Firefox web browser will include faster Javascript handling, built-in bookmark synchronization, and support for new light weight themes.

For the most part, Firefox 3.6 will look a lot like version 3.5 of the browser. Mozilla is holding off on a major visual refresh until Firefox 4.0 is released sometime next year. But the update should bring a better session restore, improved page rendering, and overall faster performance and better stability.

As you can see from the screenshot of Firefox 3.6 Alpha above, Mozilla has also built a new tab-switching feature into the browser which allows you to see previews of each page. In order to enable this feature, you'll need to futz around with the about:config menu.

Deja vu all over again: tab previews are back in Firefox 3.6

Now that Firefox 3.5 has made it into the mainstream, Mozilla is plugging away at browser.next. In last night's addition to the 3.6 nightly builds, some old-but-new tab features have finally made an appearance in Mozilla's browser.

Originally slated for 3.0, then bumped to 3.5, then bumped again, tab previews are back in Firefox 3.6. To activate the feature, you'll need to jump into your about:config and search for browser.ctrlTab.previews. Double click the entry to set its value to true, and the result is what you see above.

Your last six tabs are displayed in a floating window, with a button below that allows viewing of all open tabs (screenshot after the break).

Coming soon: Install Firefox apps and themes without restarting

No more restarting
With Firefox 3.5 set to emerge from beta soon, the folks at Mozilla are setting goals for Firefox 3.6. One of the most exciting changes scheduled for that release is the ability to install and activate themes and add-ons without restarting the browser. Sort of. Right now the goal is to develop support for "light" themes and "light" add-ons. It's not entirely clear what that means, but odds are you won't be able to install and activate every Firefox extension without a restart in Firefox 3.6. But it's a start.

Also on deck are features and improvements including:
  • Performance improvements including faster browser startup times, and improved responsiveness
  • Ability to create, save, and restore groups of tabs
  • Improved interface for file uploading
  • Ability to turn web pages into desktop apps (as you can do with Mozilla Prism or Google Chrome)
  • New default theme for Windows that uses Aero Glass

The World's Hardest Game 2.0 - Time Waster

So, just how good at time waster games are you? Think you've got the stuff? Well, The World's Hardest Game 2.0 doesn't think you do. Yes, amazingly, it's possible to have a sequel to a game called "The World's Hardest Game". It doesn't seem logically possible, since if the first one was actually the world's hardest, how could another one come along and share the moniker? It made me doubt the name in the first place. That is, until I tried the game. The mechanics of the game are very simple. You are a small red square, ...
