Vacuum Places Improved Firefox add-on speeds up Firefox

Vacuum Places ImprovedI have a love/hate relationship with Firefox. I love the functionality it gives me, but I hate how over time it slows down and acts like a bloated pig. Two of the biggest factors that will make Firefox drag are the amount of history it maintains, and defragmentation of the Places database. We've already told you how to fix both of those issues, but it turns out that there is now an extension that takes the place of pasting a command into the error console in Firefox to vacuum the Places database and remove any fragmentation.

Vacuum Places Improved is a very simple Firefox extension that adds a small vacuum cleaner icon to your status bar in Firefox. When clicked, it vacuums your Places database, just like the command that Lee described in his post in August, but with a single click of the mouse. In my case, the results were remarkable - starting Firefox went from taking about a minute and a half to about ten seconds.

Craigslist Image Preview: Firefox extension to add images to Craigslist searches

Odds are, if you're an avid user of craigslist, you've often asked this question: why can't I have the ability to see the images of each listing without having to click on each listing individually?

Download Squad reader "Mac" feels your pain, and has directed us to a new Firefox extension, Craigslist Image Preview. This neat and simple extension loads a thumbnail of the product images on the craigslist search page itself, eliminating the need to click on each individual listing to view an image.

Ah, Firefox, will thy extensibility never cease to amaze us?

The weird thing is, the only section of craigslist that has this functionality by default is the "bikes" section.

What's up with that?

Anyway, Craigslist Image Preview is a cinch to download (it installs like any other Firefox extension); once downloaded and installed, the next time you search craigslist, you'll see the first image of each listing load underneath its listing title. Obviously, the load time of the search page is much longer, but we think it's worth it.

For similar if not identical functionality, check out CLPicView version 1.0, also just released. Both extensions are free, and both seem to have an equal dislike of Firefox 3 beta 4.

Thanks, Mac!

Better Flickr : Firefox add-on of the day

Better FlickrIn the spirit of the amazing Better Gmail Firefox extension released by Gina Trapani comes the latest Lifehacker code: Better Flickr. Gina is a self-professed Flickr nut, so it was probably only a matter of time before she put something like this together.

There are an amazing number of Greasemonkey hacks and existing extensions to extend and improve on Flickr's built-in functionality. Gina's done a great job of honing on on the best ones, and including only those in her new extension.

For example, Better Gmail includes extra features that enable EXIF image information to show overlaid on an image if you leave the mouse pointer hovering on the image. There is a feature that adds more user links, and one that adds some rich editing capabilities to the text forms on Flickr. A couple more of the features include an instant magnifier, and one that turns the All Sizes link into a menu, so you can jump right to the size that interests you most.

Better Gmail requires Firefox on any operating system that will run it.

Graveyard Shift - zombie-busting Time Waster

With Halloween fast approaching, it's a great time to get in some practice defending your territory against zombies. In Graveyard Shift, you take aim at zombies and other creepy-crawlies, blasting them into splatters of cartoony green guts. It's a casual first-person shooter, and it's very easy to get the hang of - use the mouse to aim, click to fire. Graveyard Shift has at least 15 levels, and it might even have some secret stages I haven't unlocked yet. They key to getting good at Graveyard Shift is learning to use ...
