Mobile Minute: ESET to release security app for Symbian smartphones

ESET is one of the most respected antivirus providers around, and they're not new to the mobile world. They've been selling a WinMo product for some time.

Now, they're making a push for another segment of the smartphone ecosystem -- those running Symbian OS.

The new product will not only provide protection against malicious software targetting Symbian phones, but ESET also plans to include a remote wipe feature. For the $24.95 annual price tag it's likely to carry (or just north of $37 for two years), that's not a bad deal at all.

There will also be a built-in firewall for added protection. The SMS spam filter which ships with the Windows Mobile version will not, however, be included.

Eset Smart Security Beta 4 available for download

Eset has released the first public beta downloads of their excellent Smart Security suite. It's available for both 32 and 64-bit Windows systems.

The list of enhancements in the new version is lengthy, including:
  • a new device driver has been added which can remove malware at boot time
  • improved scanning of files over 2gb, network files, and Microsoft Office documents
  • hardened kernel service that better resists malicious tampering attempts
  • scanning of SSL-encrypted SMTP and POP3 email, as well as IMAP mail
  • support for Windows Live Mail and Mozilla Thunderbird
  • better support for Windows Vista's UAC
  • a "Watch Activity" pane shows File and Network Activity and can graph by hour, minute, or second
  • addition of a text-mode UI with keyboard navigation
Among numerous new features and improvements to the antivirus/malware protection, the suite now also includes Eset's SysInspector, an excellent system diagnostic, monitoring, and reporting tool. Antispam and firewall features are also included in the package, as is the SysRescue tool which can create bootable rescude media.

Though Eset has yet to announce an official release date, my Beta 4 install license reports that it will remain valid until March 2, 2009.

Locate risky Windows files and settings with ESET SysInspector

ESET SysInspector
ESET SysInspector is a Windows application that displays all kinds of system data about your computer. You can use it as a browser for running processes, network connections, important registry entries, services, drivers, and system information. But what sets SysInspector apart from Windows Task Manager or SysInternals Process Explorer is that it will let you filter processes, files, and settings by their "risk level."

Unfortunately, SysInspector doesn't clearly define exactly what makes some files and settings risky while others are not. And there are no options to delete or uninstall files or delete registry settings from within the application. But SysInspector is still in beta, so perhaps we'll see more functionality in the final release.

SysInspector is an executable file, meaning no installation is required. It's available as a free download.

Graveyard Shift - zombie-busting Time Waster

With Halloween fast approaching, it's a great time to get in some practice defending your territory against zombies. In Graveyard Shift, you take aim at zombies and other creepy-crawlies, blasting them into splatters of cartoony green guts. It's a casual first-person shooter, and it's very easy to get the hang of - use the mouse to aim, click to fire. Graveyard Shift has at least 15 levels, and it might even have some secret stages I haven't unlocked yet. They key to getting good at Graveyard Shift is learning to use ...
