Yahoo acquires Inquisitor: Oh no?

inquisitor preferences
The bright developer behind Inquisitor has announced today that Yahoo! has acquired the rights to his program, which searches for and suggests results as you type. It's very similar to Spotlight except that it searches the Internet instead of your Mac's HDDs.

We worry that Yahoo! might ruin Inquisitor by preventing it from working with other search engines, but the developer insists he will remain the lead mind behind the program. He will not be working with Yahoo! as their official employee, so at least he's keeping his creative freedom. Though we don't know if the company will allow him to apply that freedom to the program since it's technically Yahoo's now.

Our suggestion, if you use Inquisitor, is to turn off the search for updates feature, which may lead you to accidentally update the program to a crippled version. If you're happy with the way Inquisitor works, there's no point in risking an update. Otherwise, don't agree to an update without researching the changes first. We wouldn't want you to restrict Safari's search bar to Yahoo. No one deserves that.

About operates deeper in the health business

about buys health companyAbout Inc, the lonely search engine company that tends to be forgotten about, is targeting health searchers with its recent purchase of the health care ratings site, UCompareHealthCare.com.

The site specializes in rating and providing information on doctors, nursing homes, hospitals, and specialty centers so that people can make more informed decisions on their healthcare.

With this purchase, About.com and the About Health team will see the addition of approximately five million additional monthly uniques.

Currently Google, Yahoo and MSN Live already provide specialty searches and results for Health related topics, and have for some time now.

AOL video search engine open to developers

AOL video search engineCnet reports that AOL has opened its video search engine to developers. Gentlemen (and ladies), get out your hacking skills! The AOL video developer center is chock full of resources for you to hack it up right with AOL's video services. I counted two APIs including one called REST, and one for AJAX, the Application Gallery (to inspire the mash-up lying dormant in your mind), and a demo application (pictured above), and the link to request a director's account. If video and search are your thing, you can do a lot with the tools AOL has provided, so go for it and have a good time, if you want to.

Krugle - the developer's search engine

Krugle - your place to find code and technical content

Search engines are great, but what if you're a developer looking for very specific results: code, and sites about code? A new search engine called Krugle might just be the answer. It offers three separate search options: one for code, another called 'Tech Pages' for code documentation, forums and knowledgebase articles, and a third called 'Projects' which, as you might guess, helps developers track down open source projects. Users can even specify which language they're working with and whether they want to filter results from code comments, function calls, class definitions and more.

While I am no developer, this looks like a great tool for the code ninjas amongst us. Krugle is even hiring, too. Are there any DLS readers who have a developer alter-ego? Sound off if you think Krugle is doing you any good.
