Mailsmith turns freeware, gets a new owner

Mailsmith, the OS X email client from Bare Bones Software, has been handed off to Stickshift Software, a new and separate enterprise run by Bare Bones' CEO. Under Stickshift, Mailsmith has become freeware and continue on as a labor of love. Mailsmith 2.2, the first free version, is available now.

Mailsmith is a powerful text-only mail client that's been gathering a devoted following since 2002. Version 2.2 was initially announced back in '07, but remained in various stages of beta until this announcement. In case you're not familiar with Mailsmith, some of its biggest selling points are its excellent support for message filters and its finely-tuned text editing options. It also integrates nicely with Apple's Address Book.

Meanwhile, another Bare Bones product, Super Get Info, is being discontinued. The built-in Get Info feature in the latest versions of OS X have caught up to the feature set Super Get Info offered, so there was just no need to keep it around any longer.

Google Labs introduces advanced IMAP controls for Gmail

Gmail IMAP

Gmail has been supporting IMAP for almost exactly a year now, and they're celebrating by fixing the only thing I don't like about it! One of the latest brilliant ideas to come out of Google Labs is an advanced IMAP controls option that lets you mark messages for deletion without actually deleting them, and send your deleted messages to the trash instead of archiving them, Most importantly, you can hide individual Gmail mailboxes from your IMAP mail client. That sounds like a picky thing, and not really a big deal, but it's actually huge for me.

You may have noticed that Gmail has a mailbox called All Mail, that does exactly what it says -- it keeps copies of all your mail. This is fine if you're using webmail; you don't have to look at it, but it's there when you need it. If you're using an IMAP client, though, those extra copies of every last message in your account get synced to your computer all the time. Why bother downloading an email message twice, especially if you've got an overflowing inbox?

The thing is, now you don't have to. Turn on the advanced settings by going to "settings" and then "Labs" in Gmail. Once you enable the option, go back to settings and go to labels. All it takes is one checkbox, and All Mail will leave your email client alone. Brilliant. Of course, there might be a good reason for wanting to sync All Mail ... I just haven't found it yet. So thanks, Google, for fixing one of my pet peeves!

Thunderbird: auto delete duplicate messages

Thunderbird: auto delete duplicate messagesIt's a problem we've all faced before: We venture away from web based email programs to try those cool-looking desktop email clients everyone's raving about. After getting through the hassle of making sure everything syncs properly, one of the problems many seem to face is duplicate messages. Well, open source Thunderbird users don't stand around letting problems be; They face them with Thunderbird customizations like the Remove Duplicate Messages add-on.

Released by Thorsten W. Schmidt on the Mozilla site, the add-on searches a given folder for duplicate messages and automatically deletes them by tagging all duplicates with a delete flag and one message with the keep flag. To use it, first install it from the Mozilla site. Once installed, open Thunderbird and right click on a folder. Click "Remove Duplicate Messages" and that's it.

The add-on also lets you configure what fields you want to compare such as sender, message, etc. It also checks sub-folders, and can analyze about 1000 messages per second. Finally, you can choose to keep the
the bigger, smaller, unread, first found, or last found Message if you have a preference.

BlogMailr - email posts to your blog

BlogMailr[Update Nov 9, 9:48 AM PDT] Well, good news! BlogMailr has already been updated to give users the option of suppressing the "Published with BlogMailr" tagline - kudos to them for acting quickly! [/Update]

[Update Nov 9, 9:14 AM PDT] Well I have to say I'm impressed. Rob Howard comments below that BlogMailr will be making the "Published with BlogMailr" text string that is appended to all posts configurable so that users can turn if off if they so choose, and this update could happen as soon as tonight. When that does happen, I'd be happy to both start using this service myself, and recommend it to others. [/Update]

While many blog platforms offer the ability to post to your blog using an email address, it can be finicky to configure, and sometimes it just refuses to work (like on my personal blog). Worse, there's often no account verification, so if someone determines the email address you use to post to your blog, they could abuse it. I'm not certain if any of these are the reason the folks behind BlogMailr decided a new solution was needed, but for whatever reason, I'm glad they did.

BlogMailr takes the pain out of posting to your blog via email. Simply create an account, provide your blog's address, login and password, and you're provided with a unique email address that will accept email only from your email address to post to your blog.

The World's Hardest Game 2.0 - Time Waster

So, just how good at time waster games are you? Think you've got the stuff? Well, The World's Hardest Game 2.0 doesn't think you do. Yes, amazingly, it's possible to have a sequel to a game called "The World's Hardest Game". It doesn't seem logically possible, since if the first one was actually the world's hardest, how could another one come along and share the moniker? It made me doubt the name in the first place. That is, until I tried the game. The mechanics of the game are very simple. You are a small red square, ...
