Multiget is a multi-threaded download manager for any OS

If there's one thing better than a handy, free application it's a handy, free application that runs on everyone's computer. Looking for a cross-platform download manager? Take a look at Multiget.

Once installed, Multiget monitors your clipboard for download links -- or you can start putting the app to use via its floating drop box. Find something you want to download in your favorite browser, then click and drag a link onto the box to initiate the transfer. Downloads can also be started via Multiget's task menu.

Multiget supports multiple simultaneous threads per download, FTP and HTTP resuming (as long as the server supports it), and it works through proxies.

The developer provides binaries for Linux and Windows - as well as the source code, of course. Those of you running a Linux distro with apt-get can likely do a simple sudo apt-get install multiget. Mac and BSD users have to jump through the additional hoop of compiling from source, but Multiget will work for you, too!

Bypass download delays with Skipscreen for Firefox

You've got to love SkipScreen's motto: "iskp that isht." That's exactly what the handy Firefox plugin is designed to do. Once installed, Skipscreen will bypass those annoying intermediate pages you encounter when trying to download files from a site like Mediafire, RapidShare, zShare, or Megaupload. Other sites currently supported include DespoitFiles, Divshare, and LinkBucks, and more are on the way.

As stated on the SkipScreen site, the plugin has "extra dreamy" features for Mediafire (and three others). Click a link to a file hosted on one of those sites, and SkipScreen will take care of things on its own - all you have to click on is the save file dialog box once it appears.

As noted by Fred in the comments, you may want to have a look at the privacy policy before installing this:
The current version of SkipScreen does not collect user information. Future versions may include a post-download page that shows advertising or search results related to the filename, description or originating blog; that information may be available to the advertising site, and subject to their privacy policy. The providers of search results and advertisements will be clearly visible to the user, and/or noted in this privacy policy
.

Whether or not you're willing to trade some future adverts for the convenience of skipping some intermediate screens is your call. Curiously, the developers also push AdBlock on their site.

Open Source Free Download Manager v3 adds tons of new features

Free Download Manager has released version 3 of their application, and the new version sports several new features that make it an excellent option handling all your download duties.

The new release can now manage torrents as well as download and convert Flash video from sites like YouTube. A remote control feature has also been added, enabling web management of your downloads (like uTorrent's WebUI). FDM also allows you to preview certain files and can download partial contents of zip files.

At about 18mb installed, it's not as lightweight as rolling uTorrent, DownThemAll, and any one of the YouTube downloaders out there, but it's an excellent all-in-one option for people that like to keep things simple.

A full list of features is available on the FDM web site. It's released under the GPL and you can choose between the full version or the lite, which lacks the torrent, video conversion, upload, and language plugins (though you can install them later if you choose).

There's no portable download on FDM's site, but Portable Freeware Collection has one available.

Give Internet Explorer a better download manager with IE7Pro 2.0

IE7Pro
Internet Explorer 7 may have a bunch of features that were missing from earlier versions of Microsoft's web browser, like tabbed windows, but that doesn't mean IE7 can't benefit from a few tweaks. And IE7Pro is probably the most full featured tweaker on the block. Last time we looked at IE7Pro, it was looking pretty good with support for mouse gestures, Ad Blocker, and a Greasemonkey-liked script for users who want to write their own code.

Now IE7Pro 2.0 is out, and it has a few new features that make this Internet Explorer add-on even more valuable. Probably the most remarkable new feature is a download manager with support for pausing and resuming downloads.

IE7Pro 2.0 also now comes in both 64-bit and 32-bit flavors.

With Halloween fast approaching, it's a great time to get in some practice defending your territory against zombies. In Graveyard Shift, you take aim at zombies and other creepy-crawlies, blasting them into splatters of cartoony green guts.
