Doom + Heretic + Hexen (in your browser) = Epic Win - Time Waster

A while back we shared the Flash version of Doom with you as a Time Waster. What could be better than Doom in your browser? How about single-page access to Doom, Heretic, and Hexen?

Yep. All three demo games have been open sourced, and some heartless bastard decided it was a good idea to roll them into a single Flash-powered ball of awesome that we can play in our browsers instead of getting any actual work done. They're Flash 10 only, so make sure you're up to date before you try to play.

Thank god these are just the demos and not the full games, or this would quite possibly become the biggest Friday Time Waster ever.

There's no music, and you may have trouble getting some cheat codes to work (not that you'll try, of course), but who cares? You'll notice some gripes in the comments about control as well, but come on - Hexen in your browser while at work? 'Nuf said.

Grab your BFG and play Doom in your browser - Time Waster

This one really takes me back. As soon as I saw the opening screen, I could picture a dozen people crammed into my dorm room watching my roommate and I deathmatch over our awesome null modem cable.

Yes, Doom 1 has been recompiled in Flash from the original source. It plays just like I remembered the original, and could definitely become a giant Time Waster for anyone else who was hooked on Doom when it was first released.

Playing through a few levels almost made me forget how terrible the movie was (sorry, Dwayne).

There's no music, but I usually had that shut off and listened to my Discman. All the old cheat codes work as well: in case you've forgotten, IDDQD activates "degreelessness" and IDKFA will enable all weapons, keys, and ammo, and boost your armor to 200%. Not that I'm saying you'll need to cheat, but when you remember something like that after 14 years, you give it a try to see if it still works.

You'll need Flash 10 to play, and a non-PowerPC computer to run it.

By the way: if you also enjoyed Heretic (think Medieval Doom with a crossbow), you can find an updated Shockwave version of it on this site.

Thanks, Blake!

Play DOS games on your Mac

Lee's posts about gaming old school in your browser or on your PC have had me itching to get in on the old-school action myself. Unfortunately, because I use a Mac and prefer to stay in OS X when possible, some of the cooler emulators and browser ports are off limits. Sure, I can always play with the wicked cool Virtual ][ and get my Oregon Trail on like it's first grade all over again -- complete with whirring disk sounds -- but I think we all know that all the real old school computer games were made for DOS.

Russell Heimlich, AKA kingkool68 in the comments, tipped us to a great OS X front-end for DOSBox: Boxer. If you aren't familiar with DOSBox, it is an emulator that simulates an Intel x86 PC running MS-DOS, with a focus on running games as smoothly as possible.

Boxer feels very Mac-like and is extremely easy to use. Just add .boxer to a game's folder and the corresponding EXE files will open up in Boxer. You can then launch games from the Finder and have access to Mac-friendly keyboard shortcuts.

Sound, video, the whole thing works flawlessly. Within a few seconds of downloading Doom, I was presented with that familiar music and the the bloody menus that brought back to 5th grade all over again. Now I want to track down some old school games like Theme Park and Sim Ant!

If you're a Mac user and want to get your DOS-game on, check out Boxer! It runs on Intel Macs running OS X 10.4.11 or higher, though Leopard is recommended.

The OLPC: It plays Doom

Despite what you may have heard, the most important question when considering a buying a new device is "Does it play Doom?" And to that end we have good news for you: The OLPC, a.k.a. the "$100 laptop," does, in fact, play Doom. Christopher Blizzard managed to install the classic game on his green machine, which has just gone into production. Check out this video of the OLPC in action:

After the jump you can see another video of Doom being played in the OLPC's grayscale reflective mode.

The World's Hardest Game 2.0 - Time Waster

So, just how good at time waster games are you? Think you've got the stuff? Well, The World's Hardest Game 2.0 doesn't think you do. Yes, amazingly, it's possible to have a sequel to a game called "The World's Hardest Game". It doesn't seem logically possible, since if the first one was actually the world's hardest, how could another one come along and share the moniker? It made me doubt the name in the first place. That is, until I tried the game. The mechanics of the game are very simple. You are a small red square, ...
