Stuck For a Domain Name? Dot-o-mator to the Rescue!

Dot-o-mator is never stuck for catchy or bizarre names
You've got enough to worry about with your new Web 2.0 startup without having to come up with a clever name - never mind a matching domain name that's actually available.

Well, why not take advantage of Dot-o-mator, a crafty little web app that reaches deep into its dictionary and outputs a list of possible domains that would make Dr. Seuss proud.

Of course, coming up with a combination is only half the battle. You've got to somehow find one that hasn't been snatched up by some underhanded domain prospector. Dot-o-mator makes that easy, too, giving you one-click access to a multi-name availability check.

It's a great brainstorming tool, and can be a huge help in the struggle to brand your new web venture. We like it for the possibility of setting up private Gmail service on a domain like "skablab.com."

uTube.com makes $1000 a day from a typo

UTubeRemember uTube? Of course you do. Who could forget about the Universal Tube & Rollform Equipment Corporation.

OK, that was trick question. But the corporation's website happens to be similar enough to a popular video sharing site that nearly 2 million people each month mistype YouTube.com and wind up visiting uTube. You'd think that'd be a good thing, but not if it means crashed servers and high bandwidth costs. So uTube filed a lawsuit after Google (with its deep pockets) purchased YouTube last year.

Now Red Herring reports that uTube is actually making money off of user typos. A lot of money.

The corporation has installed a ring tone search engine that lets users find and download cellphone ring tones. The site is now bringing in almost $1000 every day. But uTube hasn't dropped its suit against YouTube. The corporation is still seeking damages and a permanent injunction against use of YouTube.com. Cause, you know, people who don't even know how to spell YouTube will definitely stop visiting your site immediately after YouTube changes to a new URL.

.ly domain name registration final.ly open

indubitab.ly!I'm not exactly sure how fresh this news is, but apparently the company that was supposed to be handling registration for Libya's .ly top-level domain name but had utterly failed to do so since April 2004 has been given the boot. As of October 14 of this year, .ly registration is in the more capable hands of GPTC, Libya's General Post and Telecommunications Company. Why is this news? Because now .ly domain name registration is open to everybody, everywhere, at LibyanSpider.com, and there are a ton of great names still available, especially if you're a fan of "domain hacks" a la del.icio.us and peter.roj.as. Over at his blog Duane Johnson lists a bunch that are still available, like emi.ly, bare.ly, real.ly, gnar.ly, simp.ly, superb.ly, and unfortunate.ly. And if that's not enough, here's 10 freebies from me: pear.ly, whee.ly, wry.ly, queer.ly, tragical.ly, magical.ly, fol.ly, mol.ly, sole.ly, and gol.ly.

So, what's the catch? Well, whether you'd consider it a catch depends on how much cash you have: a .ly domain name will cost you $150 per year. So if you're just looking for a vanity domain, you might consider looking elsewhere. However, if you're looking for a memorable domain name for your new Web 2.0 start-up, $150 might be a steal.

Graveyard Shift - zombie-busting Time Waster

With Halloween fast approaching, it's a great time to get in some practice defending your territory against zombies. In Graveyard Shift, you take aim at zombies and other creepy-crawlies, blasting them into splatters of cartoony green guts. It's a casual first-person shooter, and it's very easy to get the hang of - use the mouse to aim, click to fire. Graveyard Shift has at least 15 levels, and it might even have some secret stages I haven't unlocked yet. They key to getting good at Graveyard Shift is learning to use ...
