File sharing service DivShare isn't dead yet

DivShare

Once upon a a time, DivShare was my favorite file sharing service. The company offered unlimited storage space and unlimited downloads, and tools that let you embed uploaded audio, video, and image files on any web page. But last year the company bowed to the inevitable and realized that unlimited free storage is a tough business model to maintain, and implemented a 5GB storage limit and 50GB bandwidth cap on free accounts.

Now that bandwidth cap is even lower, at just 10GB. Paid account holders can get up to 50GB of storage space and 500GB of bandwidth per month. And according to TechCrunch, the company is actually turning a profit. The company was put up for sale last year, and after a pretty long period on the auction block, DivShare was recently purchased by a company called 3Sixty. So it looks like DivShare isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

There are plenty of other services out there that offer 5GB or more of free storage space. But if you just need a quick and easy to use service that will let you host media files, DivShare is certainly worth checking out.

DivShare implements upload and bandwidth limits

DivShare limitsOnline file hosting and sharing service DivShare has a lot going for it. Users can upload and share pretty much any file, and if you've got media like pictures, documents, audio, or video to share, DivShare has a slick Flash utility for embedding content on your web page. Best of all, unlike other services out there, so far DivShare hasn't put caps on how much online storage space you can use or how much bandwidth users get for file downloads.

All that is changing. DivShare, which has been having trouble making money, and which was put up for sale a while back, has announced plans to institute storage and bandwidth caps. DivShare users with free accounts now get 5GB of storage and 50GB of bandwidth. If you want more you'll have to pay to upgrade your account.

Sure, 5GB is more space than you get from a lot of competing services. But when you're a company that's built its name on unlimited uploads and downloads, any limits are a bit hard for users to swallow. According to the DivShare Blog, fewer than 10% of the service's users are currently exceeding the limits, so most users will not need to upgrade. And users who have already exceeded the limits will not have files deleted, but they will have to delete some files before they can upload any more (or you know, create a new account). In theory, the move will make the service more reliable for the vast majority of users who don't come close to approaching the new limits. But something tells us that won't mean much to users who have been told to delete files.

Divshare for sale, is your online media safe?

DivshareTechCrunch is reporting that online media sharing site Divshare has put its domain name and web service up for sale. And this raises an important question: what happens when you upload all of your images, movies, or audio files to an online service like Divshare, YouTube, or Flickr if that site goes out of business?

Right now it's not clear what the future holds for Divshare.com. The owners are obviously selling the site, which has 200,000 registered users and a few million hits a month. A smart buyer would build on Divshare's assets and expand the business, you know, if it's profitable. But it's also possible that whoever buys the company could dramatically change the business model and either delete existing user accounts and data or start charging you to access the media you've already uploaded.

Now, we're assuming you haven't been silly enough to park valuable personal data like home movies and photos online without saving backup copies. But if you've embedded Divshare content on your blog or other sites, any serious changes to the service could turn your web site into Swiss cheese.

DivShare launches Facebook application

divshare facebook applicationIt was only a little while ago that Zoho got into the Facebook game and offered up its applications inside of accounts. Now it seems like so many other companies have also developed their own Facebook applications, mainly because Facebook is the social place to be.

Another recent leader in the race to Facebook is DivShare. They have jumped on board and added the ability to send documents, photos, music and videos to friends in Facebook. With the DivShare Facebook application users can choose to send files to individuals, post them in profiles or add them to news feeds. It's an easy way to share files to people in a network.

The application can be found at http://apps.facebook.com/divshare/ , with accounts having unlimited storage space. There is a 200MB file size cap when uploading.
