Microsoft helps block Internet Explorer 7 update

No IE7Yesterday David reported that Microsoft will be pushing Internet Explorer 7 to all Windows XP users via Automatic Update in Q4 of this year. He also reported that Microsoft will "provide corporations with the ability to optionally block or postpone the automatic download and installation of IE 7." In case you're wondering how, here's your answer: Microsoft has released Internet Explorer 7 Blocker Toolkit, an official tool that will prevent Automatic Update from delievering IE7. The target market for this is system administrators whose essential browser-based apps might break in the new browser, but that doesn't stop the individual IE-haters and ultra-paranoid from using it, too.

Guide to useless Windows services

Guide to Useless Windows ServicesSpeaking of Windows getting bogged down, you're probably aware that Windows runs a lot of stuff in the background that takes up memory and processor cycles that could be better spent elsewhere, and you might even know how to access the Services control panel, but once you're there it can be hard to know what to keep and what to kill. There is help to be found, however: Guide to Useless Services is an article on TechTree written back in December that identifies and describes 29 services that are probably running on your computer and probably don't need to be. Shut 'em down!

xpy: Protect yourself from Windows XP

xpyxpy is a "small tool which disables the default threats of a Windows XP installation." When they say small they really mean it: It's under 60kb and does all of the following:
  • Disable Windows "calling home"
  • Disable questionable services
  • Disarm Internet Explorer
  • Disarm Windows Media Player
  • Remove Windows Messenger
  • Improve privacy and security
  • Improve performance
Not bad for a tiny app based entirely on the NSIS installer. xpy is fully configurable so you can choose what you want removed removed or disabled and restore it at any time, and it also happens to be open source.

The World's Hardest Game 2.0 - Time Waster

So, just how good at time waster games are you? Think you've got the stuff? Well, The World's Hardest Game 2.0 doesn't think you do. Yes, amazingly, it's possible to have a sequel to a game called "The World's Hardest Game". It doesn't seem logically possible, since if the first one was actually the world's hardest, how could another one come along and share the moniker? It made me doubt the name in the first place. That is, until I tried the game. The mechanics of the game are very simple. You are a small red square, ...
