Adobe CS3 SDK's available, more to come

Adobe has released Creative Suite 3 for the masses, which means their attention can now turn to the SDKs for the developers in the audience (that's: Software Development Kit for the rest of us). After all, we can't design by built-in filters and plugins alone, can we? Mark Niemann-Ross, Adobe's Developer Evangelist, has announced on his Adobe Blog that some of the SDKs are in fact ready and poppin' fresh from the oven. Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash, InDesign (including Server) and four more are already available, with SDKs for the rest of their CS3 products on the way. You can keep an eye on Mark's post for updates as new kits become available, or simply check out Adobe's Developer Center as well.

Adobe Creative Suite 3 unboxing video

Creative Suite 3 Web Premium arrived, and boy is it packing a punch. Before we get to dissecting the intricacies of this major upgrade, we thought it would be fun to step it up a notch in the 'I got a new [thing]' space on the internets with an unboxing video. Yep - the days of unboxing pictures are numbered, as video is the inarguable craze these days. Granted, CS3 isn't quite as hot as some new imported gadget, but you can consider this a sort of test run with the format.

We will of course have more on CS3 once it's actually installed, so enjoy the unboxing video for now, and let us know what you think.

A preview of Adobe Apollo in the works

adobe apollo live tourA lot has been said about the upcoming Adobe Apollo environment, good and bad. Some people don't like the fact that its another installable runtime, some think its great because of the possibilities. For certain though, this cross operating system runtime is going to be sparking up some very intuitive rich internet applications for the desktop in the next little while. Apollo is scheduled for release at the end of the year, but is currently available online in a public alpha mode.

Adobe's Mike Downey took the audience through Apollo at Sunday's FITC in Toronto, and showed off some very cool in-development projects, including a desktop application that is in the works for eBay, RSS reader, and the Adobe Media Player.

Designers and Developers will have fun with this application; it's built to handle all of the standard tools and code, including support for Flash, Actionscript and HTML.

Take a peak at Flash CS3 straight from Adobe's mouth

adobe cs3 liveThe newest release of Flash CS3 brought with it many extremely cool new features. This was the first ground up rebuild of all of Adobe's products after the big buyout of Macromedia.

At the recent FITC event in Toronto on Sunday, Adobe gave a demo of the new Flash CS3, and went over a few of the major new upgrades to the tool. These include the ability to import PSDs straight into Flash, and, this is the real kicker, the ability to dynamically generate XML code for use in AS3 through timeline based animations.

From the very few demos of all the new applications in CS3 I have seen so far, it could definitely be the time to upgrade, for productivities sake. It still hurts the wallet though.

Take a peek of the video of the presentation.

Adobe releases preview versions of After Effects CS3 and Premiere Pro CS3

Let the fun begin! Adobe has released preview versions of After Effects CS3 and Premiere Pro CS3. This should give you something to play with until the final products ship "mid-summer".

The After Effects preview is available to licensed users of After Effects 7, Production Studio, Video Bundle or Web Bundle. You will need to provide your AE7, Production Studio or Bundle serial number in order to get an After Effects CS3 preview serial number. If you don't own any of the required products, you can check out the software for 2 days before it self destructs. The preview is available as a Universal Binary for Mac and XP/Vista platforms.

The Premiere Pro preview is available for Intel Macs and XP/Vista platforms. Sorry PowerPC users, there are no plans for a version of Premiere Pro for you. I don't see any license restriction on this preview so it looks like anyone can give it a whirl. There is a big gotcha if you are running Mac OS 10.4.9. DV Capture will not be functional, and that's kinda a big deal. Adobe is working with Apple to resolve this problem, but if you want to capture DV with the preview version, Adobe recommends you reinstall the OS using your original system discs, then update to 10.4.8. No thank you.

Remember, these are preview versions so if you get into trouble there is no tech support. As a Premiere Pro to Final Cut Pro switcher, I'm curious how Premiere's entry back into the Mac world will play out.

Adobe CS3 pricing, high as usual

adobe cs3 pricing
CS3 pricing is out, and it looks a bit high! Amazon might have let the cat out of the bag a little early when it comes to the not yet released Adobe CS3 applications. Officially CS3 is due out on March 27th, but Amazon accidentally flipped the switch to show the pricing of the newly designed creative suite a day earlier.

The pricing structure looks like this:
  • Adobe Creative Suite CS3 Web Premium - $1599
  • Adobe Creative Suite CS3 Master Collection - $2499
  • Adobe Creative Suite CS3 Production Premium - $1199
  • Adobe Creative Suite CS3 Design Premium - $1599
We know we weren't the only users grinding our teeth hoping that Adobe might bring the pricing down slightly, but that looks like that's out of the question for now.

DLS wants to know - If you are dishing out and buying into the new CS3, which version do you have your sights set on?

Check out a chart that displays what applications are bundled with which version in the new CS3 here.

Adobe to webcast special CS3 launch event

In just over one week, on March 27th at 3:30 p.m. EST, Adobe will be hosting their special Creative Suite 3 launch event in New York City, and the entire event will be webcast from their website for all the world to see.

Alls you got to do is tune into their website at the prescribed time, and then you too will witness firsthand the launch of "the largest software release in Adobe's 25-year history". Their words, not mine, but this is indeed a much-anticipated event, seeing that specific details regarding CS3 have been on the down low, for the most part. So, tune in!

HD Photo support for Photoshop

photoshop hd supportWhats next for Microsoft? Well, at least one of its eyes is focused on the HD Photo format, once called Windows Media Photo. This is reportedly a better alternative to the standard JPEG format, and of course, it's built into Windows Vista. The new format features multiple color formats for display or print, high dynamic range image encoding, lossless compression, and efficient decoding for multiple resolutions.

Adobe has adopted the technology by enabling Photoshop to read and write images that are stored in Microsoft's HD Photo format. There is a plug-in download ready for Windows users on Microsoft's website. A PowerPC and Intel based Mac download will be ready in two weeks, and a final plug-in release is due for April. This new plug-in allows for Photoshop users to save raw images taken directly from a digital cameras image sensor, as an HD Photo image. This plug-in will work with CS2 and the upcoming CS3.

Microsoft has also announced that many companies will be adopting the raw uncompressed photo type format and digital cameras with HD capabilities are scheduled to arrive on shelves in 12-18 months.

Two flavors of Photoshop CS3

When the complete Adobe Creative Suite 3 package is revealed on March 27, Adobe will announce not one, but two distinct flavors of Photoshop, including a standard Photoshop CS3 and the new Photoshop CS3 Extended.

Photoshop CS3 Extended includes the same tools as Photoshop CS3, but also contains a brand new set of features for the integration of 3D and motion graphics, and image measurement and analysis functions. This marks the first occasion (since Photoshop 5.0 Limited Edition?) in which more than one version of Photoshop will be made available, with the new version targeted at individuals in the fields of video, architecture, engineering, medicine, and science.

Adobe CS3 to ship late spring

adobe cs3The springtime is full of growth, and that's no exception for the creative software market. Adobe has just dropped the news that it will be announcing Adobe Creative Suite 3 March 27th, 2007 in New York City, with the full product shipping later in spring 2007.

If you can't be there on site, you can also tune into Adobe's live webcast where they will reveal all of the new features and configurations. Adobe says that this will be the largest software release in their 25 year history. Could this new CS3 include all of the recently acquired Macromedia products like Flash? It currently does carry Dreamweaver in the 2.3 Premium CS package. Now that would make for a slamming package! I don't want to see the price tag for that one.

Photoshop CS3 does memory management right - DLS Imaging Tip

Imaging Tip: Photoshop CS3 does memory management right
I've been tinkering around with the Mac version of that new Photoshop CS3 beta Adobe unleashed, and I have to say that so far it feels like a more significant and worthy upgrade than CS2. Adobe has packed a lot of new goodies in CS3 which we'll be covering in our Imaging Tip series, and today's tip praises the return of true memory management to Photoshop.

As you can see, the Performance tab of PS CS3's updated Preferences display brings back complete control over how much RAM Photoshop gets to play with, and the scratch disk UI has received the steroid treatment as well. These are both great improvements for fine-tuning Photoshop's performance, especially for those either on older, slower systems or those blessed with desktop powerhouses.

Adobe releases Photoshop CS3 beta

Adobe Photoshop CS3Today Adobe is releasing the first beta version of Photoshop CS3. Though it isn't available at Adobe Labs at the time of this posting, it should be within the next couple hours according to the press release. The biggest update in CS3 is that it will now run natively on Intel Macs. The official FAQ (PDF) also mentions non-destructive Smart Filters, Quick Selection tool, Reine Edge, Automatic layer alignment and blending, Vanishing Point with multiple, adjustable angle perspective planes, and Black and White conversion. The beta version of CS3 will be available to owners of Photoshop CS2. You can find more details at Adobe's Scott Byer and John Nack's blogs.

Update: It looks like even if you don't own CS2 you can still try the CS3 beta for free for 30 days.

The World's Hardest Game 2.0 - Time Waster

So, just how good at time waster games are you? Think you've got the stuff? Well, The World's Hardest Game 2.0 doesn't think you do. Yes, amazingly, it's possible to have a sequel to a game called "The World's Hardest Game". It doesn't seem logically possible, since if the first one was actually the world's hardest, how could another one come along and share the moniker? It made me doubt the name in the first place. That is, until I tried the game. The mechanics of the game are very simple. You are a small red square, ...
