Microsoft, unable to buy Facebook, makes their own for Big Biz

Steve BallmerSo we all know the saga of Microsoft and Yahoo, Microsoft and Facebook, Facebook and Yahoo, and so on and so forth.

But at the Enterprise 2.0 Conference in Boston Microsoft is expected to show off their own new social networking project that the company's been "incubating" for a while. It's called "TownSquare".

TownSquare is a social networking platform for your company to use internally. Apparently it even looks like Facebook. There's probably a village idiot in every company too that will use it for something inappropriate, which is the true test of a full on corporate piece of software.

The goal is to provide a system for storing anniversaries, job promotions, shared docs, and other information about employees. It actually sounds kind of neat and useful.

Microsoft has been using it since January with 8,000 employees and no word on whether it displays in Internet Explorer correctly (we told you all jokes aside, "for now")

Hopefully some screenshots will surface soon.

Google partners with IT firm to grow Enterprise Apps business

Google partners with IT firm to grow Enterprise Apps businessA leading worldwide IT consultancy and outsourcing business with control of over 1 million corporate desktops has added Google Apps to its technology arsenal.

CapGemini [PDF] will start to target the desktops of over a million corporate workers with Google's spread of online office applications that consist of Email, Calendar, Docs and Spreadsheets. Slashing IT costs, and saving corporations countless dollars. CapGemini is currently a Microsoft Vista and Lotus Notes partner, but given the search giant's efforts with their "accessible anywhere" applications and storage, CapGemini's clients will have yet another option for the most appropriate technology that fits into their business goals. With Google's applications, users can allow for complete collaboration watching changes in real time.

Google is rumored to be launching a Presentation application into its suite of applications shorty, rounding out its professional offerings. Something for Microsoft to watch out for. CapGemini will collect a £25 license fee charged by Google for the use of its applications.

Cogmap, The Wikipedia of Organizational charts

cogmap

Take Wikipedia, and mash it up a bit. That's what Cogmap is. Cogmap is a Wikipedia style organizational chart that maps out corporate structures. The application that they have created is pretty powerful and easy to use. Users can browse through organizations listed, and check out the corporate structures of companies including Google, Yahoo, and Microsoft. If you know of any incorrect information, or can add in additional names, members can make the changes. Cogmap is a pretty powerful tool. Like Wikipedia, if you need information on individuals like phone numbers, emails, job titles, and addresses, they could be listed here. Try it out.

Microsoft will push IE7 with Automatic Updates

Internet Explorer 7I was considering prefacing this post with 'recipe for disaster', but I didn't want the food and cooking news aggregators to pick it up by mistake. Microsoft Watch is reporting that the Redmond giant is planning to use their Automatic Updates service to push IE 7 out to Windows users sooner or later in Q4 once the product is ready to ship. Fortunately for the sysadmins in the crowd, Microsoft will also provide corporations with the ability to optionally block or postpone the automatic download and installation of IE 7. Further, the update will be presented through a notification - it won't just happen automatically - and users who have chosen to hide IE altogether won't even be bothered with the download at all.

Of course, Windows users will still need to pass the WGA test, whether they grab this 4-years-coming update to Internet Explorer, whether they grab it through Automatic Updates or download it from Microsoft's site.

AOL to launch AIM Pro for corporations

AIMAccording to CNet, today AOL (this blog's parent company) will launch AIM Pro, a new version of its instant messaging product aimed (no pun intended) at corporate users. AIM Pro will be free for anyone to use and will include all of the standard AIM features, plus integration with Microsoft Outlook's calendar and directory features and WebEx's voice, videoconferencing, and collaboration features. It also lets users use their professional email addresses instead of AIM screen names and has built-in SSL encryption. Later on, AOL plans to offer a premium version of AIM pro that includes "an IT management console, logging and regulatory compliance features." Regarding interoperability with other networks, which may be of particular importance to business users, AOL's VP of business services Brian Curry said, "I think we are slowly making our way there...We don't have anything to announce around that right now."

The World's Hardest Game 2.0 - Time Waster

So, just how good at time waster games are you? Think you've got the stuff? Well, The World's Hardest Game 2.0 doesn't think you do. Yes, amazingly, it's possible to have a sequel to a game called "The World's Hardest Game". It doesn't seem logically possible, since if the first one was actually the world's hardest, how could another one come along and share the moniker? It made me doubt the name in the first place. That is, until I tried the game. The mechanics of the game are very simple. You are a small red square, ...
