Cooliris adds support for browser tabs

Cooliris tabs
Cooliris is a browser plugin that lets you search for and view pictures and videos from sites including YouTube, Flickr, and Google Images. It works with Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari, and Flock, all of which support tabbed browsing. But up until recent, Cooliris didn't support tabs at all. When you launched the plugin, it would automatically show you a full screen media browser. The only way to search for multiple items would be to launch separate instances of the browser and flip between them.

But the latest version of Cooliris lets you find and view media within a normal browser tab. And that means you can also open up multiple instances of Cooliris within a single browser session. You can look for pictures of kitties in one tab while watching the latest updates on YouTube from Iran in another.

One thing to beware of though, is that Cooliris can be a bit of a RAM hog. If you thought Firefox used a lot of memory under normal conditions, try launching 5 or 6 Cooliris tabs and see what happens. OK, I'll tell you. The browser locks up and you get a warning notice telling you to close Cooliris tabs or other "3-D graphical applications."

Cooliris iPhone app enables NSFW mode for Google searches

With all the hoopla over Apple's approval process for iPhone apps, it's nice to see them make a sensible decision about a feature they could have nitpicked. Cooliris, a slick image-viewing app we've covered before, recently added an option to adjust SafeSearch settings for Google images. That means you can view NSFW image search results on your iPhone in one of the best-looking gallery interfaces around.

This is a big win all around. Although Cooliris is great for galleries on social sites like Facebook, being able to display Google Images results is one of its best features. Now users who don't want to see NSFW images still don't have to, but now users who want to see them have that option. Other features in the latest version of the Cooliris iPhone app include bookmarking sites and RSS feeds, and sharing via Twitter.

CoolFlick: It's like Cooliris without the plugin

CoolFlick
Cooliris is an awesome web browser plugin that lets you search and browse for images and videos from Flickr, YouTube, and a handful of other sites from a central hub. But what if youw ant a Cooliris-like wall of pictures without installing yet another add-on for your browser?

CoolFlick
is a web page that provides some of the functionality of Cooliris. But there's nothing to install. Just visit CoolFlick, type in a search term, and browse through the photos of cats, computers, or landscapes, or celebrities to your hearts content. You can click anywhere on the screen and drag the wall of pictures, or you can click on an image to make it larger. If you want to visit the original page, just click the box and arrow icon that shows up when you select an image.

If you want to browse videos, Google Images, Amazon listings, or other sites, you'll still be better of with Cooliris. But if you just need a quick fix of some pretty pictures in a pretty interface, CoolFlick might do the trick.

Veoh Video Compass browser toolbar adds videos to any search

Online video site Veoh has launched a new pluin for Firefox 3 and Internet Explorer 7 that shows relevant video search results any time you conduct a search on Google, Yaho!, YouTUbe, Live.com, Ask.com, or AOL. The Veoh Video Compass tool shows videos not just from Veoh, but from other sites including Hulu and YouTube as well.

You can watch videos without leaving the page just by clicking on a result from the toolbar. A video player will pop up on your screen, and you can even browse other related videos using a toolbar built right into the video player itself.

You can sort of do the same thing with Cooliris, but while Cooliris replaces your default browser interface with a black screen showing just the results of searches conducted using the plugin, Veoh Video Compass shows you thumbnails on the same page as regular text, image, or video search results from the search engine of your choice.

Cooliris still cool on the iPhone, not quite as useful

Cooliris is a fantastic browser plugin that displays image galleries on sites like Facebook and Flickr as a wall of photos that you can manipulate by dragging. It's an attractive visual effect, and it's actually a fast and efficient way to get an overview of a gallery and find a specific image. Unfortunately, the Cooliris iPhone app isn't as useful as its browser-based counterpart.

The upside is that Cooliris for iPhone looks just as cool as the web version, and it's more fun to play with. The drag and pinch interface of the iPhone is designed for something like this. Unfortunately, the mobile version of Safari isn't. Because a browser plugin would present some seriously problems for an iPhone developer, Cooliris is a standalone app. Instead of activating it within Facebook or Flickr -- photos you might really care about -- you're limited to its search function. It's a cool toy, but it doesn't feel nearly as essential as the desktop version.

Watch videos, find music, find photos, and download them with Bookmash

Bookmash
Bookmash is an online media browser and viewer based on Adobe AIR. It lets you browse or search to find for photos, music, and videos from sites including Flickr, SeeqPod, YouTube, and DailyMotion. When you find what you're looking for, you can play your media using the built in BookMash media playing feature, or you can click the icons below the media to download, share, or bookmark the file.

The media browser looks a lot like the interface for browser plugin Cooliris. But Bookmash is a standalone program that can be run without launching a web browser first. And Cooliris lacks the media download button.

Bookmash also shows top news stories from Digg and has social networking tools that let you do things like enter a person's name to find their profiles on social networking pages. The results are opened in a web browser, not in Bookmash.

Interclue for Firefox: Getting a clue is now easy (and unobtrusive)

InterclueIt pains us to say it, but sometimes tabs are a waste of time. We hate when we're on a site, and see a story with an accompanying link that promises to be the epiphany we've been waiting for all our lives. We eagerly click the link, and feverishly switch to the new tab. Our hopes and dreams are tragically dashed to pieces when we find the link is to a parked domain that has nary a thing to do with the subject at hand.

Interclue is a Firefox extension that allows for previewing web pages before you click the link. It gets a little less buzz than the similar Cooliris extension, but we think it's just as worthy. Cooliris doesn't require clicking on the preview icon to pop up a preview window, a simple mouse over will do. It's amazing how often we mouse over the icon, not meaning to, and get the preview.

Interclue gives the option to click on the preview icon, which might give us carpal tunnel in the long run, but is much easier on our psyche than having preview windows seemingly appear at random. From the Interclue preview window, we see the contents of the page in question, as well as some optional vital stats for the site we're viewing (called metaclues). We can bookmark, email, open in tabs, and paste the site link to the clipboard. We can easily resize the preview window and change our settings to not recognize certain links or certain pages.

Interclue 1.5.1.4896 was released January 2nd, and works in Firefox 1.5 and up. Despite its impossible version number, its simple interface and unobtrusive application is a breath of fresh air for those poor souls traumatized by dead end links and madly popping preview windows. We highly recommend it for those wanting link previews who have been less than happy with other applications' execution.

Graveyard Shift - zombie-busting Time Waster

With Halloween fast approaching, it's a great time to get in some practice defending your territory against zombies. In Graveyard Shift, you take aim at zombies and other creepy-crawlies, blasting them into splatters of cartoony green guts. It's a casual first-person shooter, and it's very easy to get the hang of - use the mouse to aim, click to fire. Graveyard Shift has at least 15 levels, and it might even have some secret stages I haven't unlocked yet. They key to getting good at Graveyard Shift is learning to use ...
