Troubleshooting with your Teddy Bear

My buddy Dave once shared with me a bit of computing wisdom which I've since found invaluable.

"Proper troubleshooting requires a Teddy Bear."

As it was told to me -- long ago in a university computer lab not so far away -- there was a sysadmin who became frustrated with the number of questions he was asked by student developers. It wasn't that the questions were invalid, or that the students weren't thinking them through. Rather, his frustration was with questions which found their own answers.

Students seeking his help would begin to explain the problem they were working on. More often than not, they wouldn't finish explaining before having an "Aha!" moments; That tiny moment of clarity every developer, admin or desktop analyst seeks as a part of their job.

Being forced to explain the problem had some effect which thinking about the problem alone didn't. How can you achieve the same mind-altered state without bugging the sysadmin, or taking a handful of Adderol and Xanaax*?

The weary sysadmin found a brilliant solution. He attached a teddy bear to his desk, and forced anyone who wanted to ask him a question to address the bear and explain the problem.

So, the next time you're halfway through asking a collegue a question and find yourself saying, "Wait, I think I just got it, never mind!", remember to thank them for being your teddy bear.

* Download Squad does not condone the abuse of Adderol, Xanaax or any other prescription drugs. Just sayin'.

Make yourself a human torch with Flash 8 and a webcam

Flash 8 human torchBack in December I mentioned a cool little Flash 8 demo by Grant Skinner that interfaces with your webcam to make it look like you're being snowed on. Okay, it sounds kinda lame when I explain it that way, but it is pretty cool. Even cooler, though, is a new demo by Skinner, which also requires Flash Player 8 and a compatible webcam, that turns you into the human torch. While I don't have a webcam with which to test it out, the screenshots look great even though Skinner says they don't do it justice. Don't bother asking what this is good for-it exists soley to be neat, and to teach you a bit about Flash 8's features.

Swarm the dot com: Browser for voyeurs

Swarm the dot comSwarm the dot com advertises itself as "a new way to browse the web and find the most interesting sites." Basically what it is is a Firefox extension that watches what sites you're browsing and sends them back to the Swarm server, which then displays them (along with everyone else's) in a cool Flash visual. From the Flash interface you can see what sites people are visiting in real-time, visit them, and chat with other users about them. The coolest feature of the visualization is that it shows links as red lines, i.e when a user goes from site A to site B, a line appears (briefly) between the two sites. Is this really useful? I'm not sure-at the moment I'm being treated to a fiew of the porn sites one person is visiting (even though the data-collecting extension can be turned on and off easily), but I dig the concept and it's fun to watch.

Google Maps in 3D

3D MapsI think it's only a matter of time before Google brings something more like Google Earth to web browsers, but in the meantime check out 3D Maps, a Japanese proof-of-concept that takes map images from Google Maps and uses SVG to transform them into a pseudo-3D tilted view. It only works with Firefox 1.5 and is pretty slow, but is cool nonetheless. If you read Japanese there's some technical information here, but for the rest of us the machine-translated version is pretty obtuse.

Graveyard Shift - zombie-busting Time Waster

With Halloween fast approaching, it's a great time to get in some practice defending your territory against zombies. In Graveyard Shift, you take aim at zombies and other creepy-crawlies, blasting them into splatters of cartoony green guts. It's a casual first-person shooter, and it's very easy to get the hang of - use the mouse to aim, click to fire. Graveyard Shift has at least 15 levels, and it might even have some secret stages I haven't unlocked yet. They key to getting good at Graveyard Shift is learning to use ...
