Configuration Mania reveals hidden Firefox settings

Configuration Mania
Firefox has a ton of customization options. So many, in fact, that listing them all would make the Firefox Tools menu resemble War and Peace. So Mozilla hides some of the options you might not need to change as often away so that you can only access them by typing "about:config" into the location bar. The problem is that many users don't even know about about:config, and once you discover it, it's still not clear what all of the settings do.

Configuration Mania
is a Firefox add-on that organizes and displays many of the options that are normally only available through about:config. Here are just a few o the things you can change using Configuration Mania:
  • Location bar auto-complete behavior
  • Default domain guessing behavior (should Firefox add www or .com when you type a word into the location bar?)
  • Tab behavior (where to display the close button, default tab width, etc)
  • Hide the Go button next to location bar
  • Change your user agent
  • Adjust cache settings
Configuration Mania is available for Firefox 2 and Firefox 3 beta.

How to make Opera Mobile even better - Mobile Minute

Opera MobileOpera Mobile is already hands down one of the best, if not the best web browser for Windows Mobile devices. It loads pages faster than almost any other browser, has excellent support for VGA screens, runs on Windows Mobile 2003, Windows Mobile 5.0 and Windows Mobile 6, and supports tabbed browsing.

An upcoming release will support zooming in and out of web pages, similar to the way Opera for the Nintendo Wii works.

Yes, there are some other browsers that handle some of these functions, including NetFront, Microsoft's DeepFish and ftxBrowser, Opera combines just about every feature you'd ever want in a mobile browser into one package.

While Opera has made its desktop browser a free program to compete with Internet Explorer and Firefox, the company charges $24 for Opera Mobile, because there's really no other program that can perform as well on Windows Mobile devices. Opera Mobile 8.65 beta is currently available as a free download, but the program will expire on June 1st. this provides an excellent opportunity for anyone who wants to play around with the browser for a while before deciding whether to make a purchase.

Now, the other exiting thing about Opera Mobile is that it's extremely customizable. It would be nice if there were a few more options built into the program's Settings feature. But if you're willing to edit a few .ini files, here are a few ways to customize and improve Opera Mobile.

Tweak the Firefox leak - Today's Browser Tip

firefox memory tweakI tried this on my Mac and PC and it seems to provide just a little relief. If you recall, Firefox tends to eat memory during browsing, especially if you use a lot of tabs. For each tab, each page will cache several pages back and forward. This is nice if you want speed, but bad if you have several tabs open at once, all active in different Windows. While some said this was a memory leak, Mozilla came out to say it was, in fact, a feature. Well this made it to digg, and now the people have had their say: this may fix your Firefox memory leak. Then again, it might not. It's not a real fix, just a config change. What it does is flush the RAM of stored pages, and move everything to the HD, where large chunks should stay. The author said this saves hundreds of MB at a time. Once you minimize FF, the pages are moved to the HD from RAM. You can then restore FF and see the savings. As you can see from the comments, the mileage you get out of this one varies. The good thing is, it's easily reversible and isn't really hacking Firefox, just twiddling the controls a bit... For more enhancements, there's always the Firefox 1.5 tweak guide.

The World's Hardest Game 2.0 - Time Waster

So, just how good at time waster games are you? Think you've got the stuff? Well, The World's Hardest Game 2.0 doesn't think you do. Yes, amazingly, it's possible to have a sequel to a game called "The World's Hardest Game". It doesn't seem logically possible, since if the first one was actually the world's hardest, how could another one come along and share the moniker? It made me doubt the name in the first place. That is, until I tried the game. The mechanics of the game are very simple. You are a small red square, ...
