Scramball 2 is a speedy ball rolling Time Waster

Scramball 2Scramball 2 is a dead-simple time waster, where the goal is to roll your ball as quickly as you can through the maze to the goal. There are only four control buttons - up, down, left, and right. The ball is bouncy, and touching the walls will usually cost you time, but if you aim strategically sometimes you can use the bounciness to your advantage.

The game quickly becomes difficult, but I surprisingly found I had a lot more success when playing the game in Safari on my Mac as compared to Firefox; for some reason Flash apps seem to perform better in Safari. It was enough of a noticeable difference that I was easily able to get two levels further ahead than I'd been able to on Firefox.

The goal in each level is to get a trophy by achieving a certain speed, as measured by how long it takes you to complete the level. Unfortunately, you don't get to see what the target time is ahead of time. If you get an exceedingly fast time, you get a gem, which seems to indicate that you've mastered the level.

This is the perfect game to play for three minutes when switching tasks, or otherwise trying to relax your brain. I doubt you'd want to spend an entire coffee break on it, but sometimes that's a good thing.

Cargo Bridge - Time Waster

Cargo Bridge

In Cargo Bridge, your goal is to build a bridge that will support the weight of your workers, and the cargo they need to go and bring back to the hut. You have a limited amount of money with which to build the bridge, and limited materials - walks and connectors. Walks are the only surface your workers and their cargo can travel on, while connectors are beams that allow you to reinforce your bridge.

Bridge building games are not new, but the implementation in Cargo Bridge is well done; the graphics are fun and smooth, and the actual bridge-building part of the game is relatively easy to use. This is the best kind of physics game, where playing the game actually helps you to learn about how various shapes affect the strength of objects.

Unfortunately the game tells you what the cost is of each beam as you are placing it, but not the length, while in planning mode you are given distances between objects. It would be much easier to make symmetrical bridges if you knew the lengths of the pieces you are placing. Also, it would be nice to have a "speed up" function for when you run into a particularly difficult level and are making small changes and re-running tests.

Even including those downsides, Cargo Bridge is a very fun time waster, worthy of your coffee break.

Redstar Fall - Time Waster

Redstar FallRedstar Fall is a game that falls into the "balancing games" genre of time waster. The goal of the game is to carefully lower the red star onto the main platform without letting it fall off the side, by carefully removing the blocks that are supporting it in the correct order.

The game is definitely a no-frills affair, with an almost spartan look, but that's not a bad thing; the game play is very solid, and while the graphics aren't stunning, they're very functional and don't detract from the game's fun in the slightest.

Some of the later levels include blocks that can't be removed, exploding blocks, and multiple platforms, only one of which is the correct one.

The game is fairly quick to complete, making it a good choice if you're looking for something on your coffee break that isn't going to tempt you to continue playing into work time.

Deepleap word game - Time Waster

DeepleapFollowing people on Twitter that are at interesting conferences that I'm not at can often be frustrating, but sometimes it leads to a wonderful find. Recently Gina Trapani retweeted a somewhat cryptic tweet that made reference to javascript games, and offered deepleap.org as an example. Since the tweet in question also contained the phrase "getting mind blown", I couldn't resist heading over to deepleap.org to see what was there.

As it turns out, Deepleap turns out to be an incredibly fast-paced and addicting Scrabble-influenced word game. Knowing that it was created entirely using javascript makes it all the more amazing from a geeky perspective, but really, it's just a fun game to play.

The concept of Deepleap is simple; you are given letters on tiles at rapid regular intervals, and as your screen fills with them you must make words out of the letters you have available. Each word scores you points if it is a real word, but entering wrong words results in points being docked from your score.

The rapid-fire nature of the game is engrossing, but fortunately also makes playing in short bursts possible. This works perfectly if you're looking for a little coffee break pick-me-up that will get your brain juices flowing.

The World's Hardest Game 2.0 - Time Waster

So, just how good at time waster games are you? Think you've got the stuff? Well, The World's Hardest Game 2.0 doesn't think you do. Yes, amazingly, it's possible to have a sequel to a game called "The World's Hardest Game". It doesn't seem logically possible, since if the first one was actually the world's hardest, how could another one come along and share the moniker? It made me doubt the name in the first place. That is, until I tried the game. The mechanics of the game are very simple. You are a small red square, ...
