Google stumbles again, accidentally shares docs

Google has confirmed that a TechCrunch tipster was telling the truth: an error indeed caused some users' text documents and presentations to be unintentionally shared with others.

According to Google's statement, the glitch affected "less than .05% of documents" and only shared files to people with whom a user (or one of their collaborators) had previously shared another document.

Somehow, that's not very comforting.

Regardless of the number of users affected or how isolated an incident this was, it raises some serious concerns. Even if none of your documents were involved, they could have been. Accidentally violating privacy and exposing data (whether it's confidential or not) is a massive problem, and one that just shouldn't happen. Period.

None of my Google Docs contain any sensitive details. They don't contain any useful information about anything, for that matter. That doesn't mean I'm not concerned about who sees them and who doesn't. They're my documents, and I certainly don't want collaborators being accidentally given permission to access them.

For a while I've been pondering finally moving my documents from my desktop to my Google Docs, but that's a move that I'll be putting on hold for the time being.

Google's GDrive inches closer to becoming a reality

A watchful blogger has discovered a change in one of the files included in the Google Pack which offers a description of the service.

In the aforementioned javascript file ( which you can read here ), the Google crew offers two key insights about the enigmatic GDrive:

  • GDrive will provide reliable online backup and storage of your files, including photos, music, and documents.
  • Files will be accessible anywhere by using your desktop, a web browser, or a cell phone.
It's not much, but it's more than we've heard so far. The example files listed make me wonder if GDrive will support storing compressed archives - including the ones I often need to mail from my GMail account but can't, like batch scripts for customers.

Is Google working on an official GDrive for cloud storage?

Just about everyone with a GMail account likes the sound of apps like GmailDrive and Gspace for Firefox, but some users are hesitant to use them.

What if Google decides to pull the pin on apps like these? What about my data!?

An official GDrive has been talked about for ages, but we may not have to wonder much longer. Several users of Picasa for Mac have noticed an interesting menu item: after selecting Move to Collection, Google Web Drive appears as an option. Now isn't that interesting?

Google Blogoscoped has done further digging and discovered that Google owns the domain GoogleWebDrive.com. On top of that, a quick NSlookup reveals that www10.google.com aliases webdrive-client.l.GOOGLE.COM.

The idea of Google providing a cloud storage solution certainly doesn't come out of left field. After all, they're already providing boat loads of free storage for us in one form or another - be it GMail, YouTube, Picasa Web Albums, Blogger, or Google Apps.

The World's Hardest Game 2.0 - Time Waster

So, just how good at time waster games are you? Think you've got the stuff? Well, The World's Hardest Game 2.0 doesn't think you do. Yes, amazingly, it's possible to have a sequel to a game called "The World's Hardest Game". It doesn't seem logically possible, since if the first one was actually the world's hardest, how could another one come along and share the moniker? It made me doubt the name in the first place. That is, until I tried the game. The mechanics of the game are very simple. You are a small red square, ...
