blinkBox: add your message to embeddable video clips

blinkBoxHere's a novel way to get people to buy or rent movies from your website. Let them send clips from popular films as custom video greeting cards.

blinkBox is an online video site with a small selection of popular movies and TV shows available for download. But the site's most interesting feature is the ability to take clips from selected videos, add a message to the beginning, and share the clip with your friends.

You're supposed to be able to embed the clips on your blog or web page as well, but we couldn't get that to work. (Neither could NewTeeVee or TechCrunch). So you'll have to check out our special message to you (and John Malkovich) at blinkBox's site.

Clipmarks 2.0 introduces Clip-to-Blog, video clipping features

We mentioned Clipmarks way back in 2005 when we first discovered them, and thanks to a recent Vox update, we noticed the web clipping service just released a major new 2.0 upgrade.

On the surface, the site has received a complete redesign, featuring a sexy new layout and a live clippings monitor for public clips. The goodness, however, is far more than skin deep. There are three major new clipping features that should be a big boost to an already slick clipping service. The most significant is the ability to clip videos from YouTube and other video communities. The second major new feature is Clip-to-Blog which, as its name implies, allows you to instantly blog any of your clippings to a compatible blog service or platform. Hence the tip-off from Vox, since it's on the list.

The final major enhancement (but probably not the last on the list) is a new control bar that acts as a dashboard for taking action with/to your clippings. This is a rocking new feature that really adds some power to how you use Clipmarks and the things you store with the site.

Altogether, the new Clipmarks is a pretty impressive 2.0 upgrade, especially for a web 2.0 site.

Viacom orders YouTube to take down videos

viacom orders youtube to take down clipsViacom has been trying to get through to YouTube, spending months of negotiating trying to take clips down from MTV, BET and Paramount. Now apparently Viacom has sent a letter to Google demanding that they take down over 100,000 videos immediately. Viacom is extremely upset that the apparent filtering tools that Google had promised are not doing that great of a job, and unauthorized videos are still getting through and posted live. Viacom is hoping that Google will support a fair and authorized distribution model that will allow consumers to enjoy popular content in the future. They are looking towards a deal like CBS and many music labels have recently reached with Google and YouTube to host content and profit share ad revenue among other initiatives. The situation between the two companies seemed to escalate when Google video began linking to YouTube content recently. Viacom saw this as another avenue where they were losing potential revenues. Maybe one day all of this YouTube drama will be settled with media companies. Until then, enjoy all the content YouTube currently provides, and cross your fingers that you'll soon be able to see all of your favorite clips through the service.

Graveyard Shift - zombie-busting Time Waster

With Halloween fast approaching, it's a great time to get in some practice defending your territory against zombies. In Graveyard Shift, you take aim at zombies and other creepy-crawlies, blasting them into splatters of cartoony green guts. It's a casual first-person shooter, and it's very easy to get the hang of - use the mouse to aim, click to fire. Graveyard Shift has at least 15 levels, and it might even have some secret stages I haven't unlocked yet. They key to getting good at Graveyard Shift is learning to use ...
