BeeJive iPhone app gets AIM chatroom support, sort of

I once called BeeJive the best chat client for the iPhone, and for good reason: it supports several different chat services, offers push notifications, and has a user interface that makes chatting on the iPhone about as easy as it can feasibly be. BeeJIve just keeps getting better, too. The latest version, 3.1, now supports group chats in AIM ... almost.

Group chats are a great feature that I'm sure Beejive will fully implement soon, but I'm not a fan of the way they work now. To start a group chat, just click the plus button and add multiple contacts. So far, so good, but here's where things get sticky: the only option is a private chatroom. You have to invite contacts to allow them in.

There's also no control over the name of the room. It's just Beejive plus a random string. Also, you'll want to turn notifications off if your room is very active, because having your phone beep or buzz for every message in a fast and furious chat is a wee bit obnoxious.

I know these are all minor quibbles, but it would be great to have a separate "start group chat" button, with the ability to create and name a public room. For now, though, I'm not complaining too much when an already-excellent chat client adds a useful feature it didn't have before.

Chat on any website with Yaplet

yaplet chat hereLooking for a way to chat with people that are visiting the same website you are? Yaplet makes it easier to chat with people that visit the same websites, and have the same interests that you do. Started by two college kids as a hobby, this application has been garnering so much interest lately that their servers exploded last week. Through their no installation and registration magic, Yaplet adds a chatroom to every website on the internet. Visiting a website through Yaplet adds a frame on the left of the screen where the chatting takes place, or displays a pop-up.

There are three ways to activate chat on a website:
  • Use the Yaplet bookmarklet.
  • Enter a URL into the yaplet URL field.
  • Add a "Chat Here" button to your website.
If you want to check out the current Yaplet sites, here is a list of the top sites that people are chatting on right now.

Geesee I like to chat

geesee embedded chatGeesee is straight out of Slovakia with some startup pocket money, and an embeded online address free communication service. Geesee combines web chat that is topic based, tag searching, and widgets that connect into a central network of chat rooms. Geesee can be accessed through widgets on websites, which would be a direct embedded conduit to a chat area about that specific sites contents. From there users have multiple tabbed chat areas in which they can anonymously chat in. No need in searching the web for individuals with similar interests, just access if through your favorite websites that have the Geesee widget. Geesee is currently in development with beta testing launching October 2006, and full launch in November. You can sign up to become a beta tester on their website.

ChatCreator.com: Instant web-based chatrooms

ChatCreator.comWeb-based chatrooms predate Ajax, Flash, and Java by far, but though it's been done a million times, it's rarely done well. ChatCreator.com is of the Ajax variety, and even better the zero-registration variety. To join a chatroom, you just enter your name and the name of a chatroom.  If it doesn't already exist, it'll be created and given a URL like chatcreator.com/chatap/rooms/downloadsquad/ that you can send to your friends. The chatrooms are fairly bare-bones and lack moderation features, but they do have limited HTML-style text formatting, as well as IRC-style /me actions and automatic URL linking. The site's design isn't fantastic, but is decent enough, and chat feels quick and responsive. I'm afraid that hte lack of moderation and name-registration features will cause difficulties for anyone trying to run a chatroom of any size, but for setting up quick chats ChatCreator.com a nice service.

The World's Hardest Game 2.0 - Time Waster

So, just how good at time waster games are you? Think you've got the stuff? Well, The World's Hardest Game 2.0 doesn't think you do. Yes, amazingly, it's possible to have a sequel to a game called "The World's Hardest Game". It doesn't seem logically possible, since if the first one was actually the world's hardest, how could another one come along and share the moniker? It made me doubt the name in the first place. That is, until I tried the game. The mechanics of the game are very simple. You are a small red square, ...
