AnywhereCD online music store closing its doors

AnywhereCDOnline music retailer AnywhereCD is closing down within the next few days. The online retailer took a different approach toward music sales than pretty much anybody else around. The company's business model was based around selling CDs and throwing in free MP3 downloads. Or maybe it was the other way around.

If you ask us, there were two fatal flaws in the plan:
  1. They were selling DRM-free tracks, which kept many record labels from signing on (they had only managed to get a contract with Universal).
  2. They were hardly adding any value to your CD purchase, since anyone who buys a CD can rip their own MP3s just as easily as they can download them from the internet.
Anyway, AnywhereCD never really caught on, and plans to shut down as soon as its contract with Universal expires. In the meantime, the site is having an "everything must go" sale, which means you can pick up complete albums for $7 a piece. But you'll have to navigate a pretty difficult site to find the music you're looking for. You can browse by genre or search by band name. But if you're not sure the artists you're looking for are on the Universal Label, good luck.

la la: Trade music CDs for a dollar

la laWant some new CDs? Got some to get rid of? la la might be of some assistance. It's a web service that will hook you up with the CDs you want, in exchange for the CDs you want to rid yourself, and a dollar. It works like this: At the la la web site you enter the CDs you have and the CDs you want. When la la sees that you have a CD somebody else wants, and you agree to ship it, la la will send you prepaid mailing envelopes, and credit your account with one CD. Then, when la la sees that somebody else has a CD you want, they'll send it to you. While this might not seems like the best deal, consider how much money you're likely to get trading in your CDs at a used record store. While brand new albums are predictably rare on la la, if you're like me and constantly behind the curve when it comes to new music, or are constantly getting rid of old CDs, la la may be just what you're looking for. In addition to being good for trading CDs, la la has a social networking component and will recommend new music to you and introduce you to others with similar musical tastes.

[Thanks, David!]

FindMyCover: Fast album cover search

FindMyCoverFindMyCover is a quick way to find cover art for all those CDs you ripped. You enter the name of a band and an album and it'll return the cover art. It actually pulls the cover art straight from Amazon.com—which strangely yields images of varying sizes—so any album Amazon has a photo of you should be able to find. One small caveat is that it will only return one image no matter up, so your searches have to be pretty exact.

The World's Hardest Game 2.0 - Time Waster

So, just how good at time waster games are you? Think you've got the stuff? Well, The World's Hardest Game 2.0 doesn't think you do. Yes, amazingly, it's possible to have a sequel to a game called "The World's Hardest Game". It doesn't seem logically possible, since if the first one was actually the world's hardest, how could another one come along and share the moniker? It made me doubt the name in the first place. That is, until I tried the game. The mechanics of the game are very simple. You are a small red square, ...
