Synchronizing multiple Google calendars to iPhone

iPhone Google Sync SettingsOn today's This Week in Google, Gina Trapani presented a tip on how to synchronize your Google Calendar to iCal on a Mac. As it turns out, it is possible to subscribe to sub-calendars, but it's not immediately obvious how to do so. The same holds true on the iPhone.

If you've attempted to synchronize your Google Calendar to your iPhone only to be disappointed that it only allows you to synchronize one calendar, you'll be happy to discover that although it's somewhat hidden, there is a way to synchronize multiple calendars.

Once you configure your iPhone to synchronize with your Google account using your phone's Exchange functionality, you should have your contacts and primary calendar items synchronizing. To then choose what other calendars to display, use the instructions given on this page. They will instruct you to visit m.google.com/sync on your phone, which gives you the option to set some sync settings.

One big frustration with the iPhone's calendar is that though it displays multiple calendars in different colors, it doesn't give you any control over a given calendar's color. With some patience and fiddling, you can use the Google Sync settings described above to enable one calendar at at time and get them set to the color you want. If your primary calendar is the wrong color, it's harder to make it switch, but you can do it by disabling calendar synchronization entirely on the phone, then changing which calendars are synchronized via the Google Sync page, then re-enabling it. It takes trial and error, but with enough patience you can get things set up just as you want, as long as the colors you want consist of red, blue, orange, green, and/or purple.

Google Calendar adds holidays, sports calendars, birthdays

Google Calendar sports
Google Calendar has just added a few new options to the "add calendars" section. When you select "browse interesting calendars," you'll see the option to add public and religious holidays for dozens of countries. There's also a new Sports section that lets you add the schedules for sports leagues in Baseball, basketball, hockey, rugby, soccer, and American football.

And if you click the "More" tab you'll see an option to add the birthdays of contacts in your Google address book.

The beauty of Google Calendar is that each of these items is added as a separate calendar. Want to see your personal appointments without all the clutter? Just unselect the sports, holiday, and birthday calendars in your sidebar temporarily to make those appointments go away.

In related news, if you're too lazy to add all the appropriate holiday calendars to your site and just want to figure out whether it's a holiday today or not, there's a single-purpose web site for that. It's called... are you ready for this? IsItAHolidayToday.com. It doesn't have the most comprehensive list of holidays I've ever seen, but if it did, you'd probably see a holiday every single day.

Plaxo 3.0 opens public beta

Well that didn't take long; apparently Plaxo was planning to launch their public beta a bit sooner than we thought. Whereby 'sooner' we mean 'right now'; the company has just opened the Plaxo 3.0 doors to a public beta for one and all to sign up. Still offering most services as free, Plaxo is inarguably positioning themselves as the incontestable leader of synchronizing not only your own contacts and calendars, but also the information your contacts change in their own address books.

If you aren't up for trying out the 3.0 beta, perhaps a demo video and brief review from the omni-present Robert Scoble will give you enough information to help you lean towards one side of the fence or the other. Scoble has some of the same great things to say about Plaxo as we did, though he's running into some sluggish and flaky synching quirks (hence the all-too-disclaimer-ing beta badge). Nevertheless, it's clear that Plaxo has a great thing going, so stay tuned for a more in-depth look soon.

Calendar Magic (& other stuff)

Calendar MagicDate and time can be amongst the most frustrating calculations to perform. Although we represent dates and times using a base-10 numbering system, the actual calculations rely on an intricate understanding of how our world's calendars work, and therefore how to convert amongst them.

Windows Fanatics pointed this week to a little freeware application called Calendar Magic. Calendar Magic has more date-related features in it than you can shake a stick at. Although the user interface looks like it could use an upgrade, it doesn't adversely impact the usability of the product - in fact the simple button menu is probably a real strength of the program.

If you've ever wanted to be able to do some obscure date calculation, chances are Calendar Magic can handle it.

The World's Hardest Game 2.0 - Time Waster

So, just how good at time waster games are you? Think you've got the stuff? Well, The World's Hardest Game 2.0 doesn't think you do. Yes, amazingly, it's possible to have a sequel to a game called "The World's Hardest Game". It doesn't seem logically possible, since if the first one was actually the world's hardest, how could another one come along and share the moniker? It made me doubt the name in the first place. That is, until I tried the game. The mechanics of the game are very simple. You are a small red square, ...
