Online movie service Epix launches private beta

Epix HD
Three movie studios have banded together to launch a new premium movie channel called Epix. The project was first announced in January. Eventually the network will be available from cable and satellite providers, but today Epix launched in private beta as a web site. Which makes sense, because the idea behind Epix has always been to offer HD video content both through the TV channel and over the web, Hulu-style.

Epix is a partnership between Paramount, Lionsgate, and MGM. The goal is to offer the network for a low fee to cable and satellite providers so that Epix can be included in your basic programming package at no extra charge. Subscribers will then also have access to the movies online. In 720 resolution. Ad-free.

NewTeeVee reports that there are about 100 films available to private beta users today, including Iron Man. The video player is based on Flash and streams content at up to 3Mbps. There's also a social element to the video player that lets you schedule simultaneous viewings with up to four friends over the internet.

Incidentally, Epix never got around to purchasing the Epix.com domain name from its current owners. Instead, the site is hosted at EpixHD.com.

No more cable for you

CableLove cable, do you, huh? Why? Seriously, would iTunes (for TV shows) plus Netflix (movies, delivered and streaming) mean the end of your cable-consumed lifestyle? Honestly, what do you think, I want to know. I don't think I would use iTunes, since I don't like iTunes much and refuse to buy anything with DRM whenever possible, but other than that, I can see doing this. I am not a mindless drone who only likes the current hit shows, so the exception for me is that not all of my favorite shows are even on iTunes. A mere few years ago (let's say 5-7 years), there was no commercially available way to ditch your cable, but now, in the new age of information overload, we can. Just the sheer idea that it is possible will alert you to the fact that much has changed. You have no-doubt made some sort of jump to digital music media, CD sales continue to slip, but what about TV and movies? Let's just say that iTunes had everything cable does, as far as programming. Would you switch? What if you saved $300/year, as the story suggests?

Sandisk releases a Live TV recording device for flash cards

sandisk flash card recordingSandisk launched a TV recording device called the V-Mate. This new tool enables users to download and record up to three hours of video on SD, MicroSDHC, MiniSDHC, MMC, and Memory Stick Duo and Memory Stick Pro Duo flash cards. The device measures 5.1x2.6x0.8 inches, and changes up the analog to digital by compressing video with MPEG 4, simply by connecting to the audio/video input on a TV. This is certainly the easiest way to trap TV signals, and transfer to computers for storage, editing, or playback.

This is certainly the easiest way to trap TV signals, digitize home videos, and transfer to computers for storage, editing, or playback. Recording for the V-Mate can be done through Cable, Satellite, DVD, VCR, PVR, and Camcorders. The V-Mate also has the functionality to let you schedule recordings based on channels, dates, and stop and start times. Play back on the V-Mate is the best. Since its on a flash cards, users have the ability to check out the shows on mobile phones, handheld devices, PDA's, PC's and of course through the V-Mate connected to any TV.

The World's Hardest Game 2.0 - Time Waster

So, just how good at time waster games are you? Think you've got the stuff? Well, The World's Hardest Game 2.0 doesn't think you do. Yes, amazingly, it's possible to have a sequel to a game called "The World's Hardest Game". It doesn't seem logically possible, since if the first one was actually the world's hardest, how could another one come along and share the moniker? It made me doubt the name in the first place. That is, until I tried the game. The mechanics of the game are very simple. You are a small red square, ...
