Kill IRC repetition with the xkcd ROBOT9000

Don't speakIf you're an IRC user, then you know the only thing more annoying than seeing the same comment repeated in rapid succession by four different people is seeing it repeated in rapid succession by 24 different people. The more members there are in an IRC channel, the more likely it is that someone just joining will ask a question that was asked moments before their arrival. Add to that the number of people "LOL"ing "+1"ing each other and the signal-to noise ratio quickly becomes deafening.

In an attempt to stop the madness, Randall Munroe (of xkcd fame) and his friend zigdon have coded a rather awesome little bot and named it ROBOT9000. It's designed -- get this -- to mute the messaging ability of anyone who says anything that's already been said in the channel within the past two years (boy, those xkcd guys mean business.).

Randall and zig are still tweaking the code but you can snag the initial version if you want to try it out in your own channel. They've also set up an IRC testing channel if you want to just play around with the bot. Just don't say "hi all" when you log in. You've been warned.

FBI finds 1 million bot-infected computers

Security Center XPThe FBI is announcing a crackdown on "botherders," or the unscrupulous folks who send out viruses and trojans to hijack your computer and use it for their own nefarious purposes. Sorry, had to make it sound like something out of an old Western there to fit wit the term "botherder."

Anyway, the FBI says it's identified over a million potentially infected IP addresses as part of an ongoing investigtion.

The feds also used their press release to highlight several recent arrests of people accused of operating botnets for their own financial gain, including spam-king Robert Soloway, Jason Michael Downey of Kentucy, and James C. Brewer of Texas who allegedly infected Chicago area hospitals. Come on, hospitals?

The FBI basically recommends you regularly update your anti-virus software and use a firewall to avoid having your computer taken over. And they say they'll be contacting owners of the infected computers they've identified -- but will not be asking for personal information over email, so don't give out your passwords to anyone who says they're from the FBI.

Symantec bug exploits

symantecSymantec has collected evidence of an attack in progress from a new bot that is exploiting multiple bugs that have been around for a few months. Including a bug in Symantec's very own antivirus scanning engine. There have been seven exploits for seven different vulnerabilities from Spybot.acyr that were found in Microsoft Windows and in Symantec's antivirus application. The vulnerability has been around since May 2006, and customers that have updated their applications since then will remain unaffected. Symantec is monitoring a spike in traffic recently with activity mainly lying in .edu domains. Symantec is asking that all customers update their products to the latest available security updates to prevent against any possible attacks.

Bots arrive at Yahoo! Answers

BuddahbotBuddhabots have begun making appearances on Yahoo! Answers. Buddhabots' artificial intelligence is being demonstrated according to it's creator. "The Buddhabot is the first and only AI to compete with human beings to provide the best answers on Yahoo Answers new social networking site."

Ron Ingram is the human behind Buddhabots and according to his blog, "I look for questions randomly and let the Buddhabot respond on my behalf." This leaves me to believe Buddhabot isn't scanning Y! Answers and responding faster than a human could which would be rather irritating. It has answered 100 questions over the past three weeks and, to its credit, eleven have been chosen as the "Best Answer." I, a mere human, have a 57% "Best Answer" rate. Phew.

Manage your budget with an AIM bot

BudgetBotOver at Lifehacker they've come up with yet another novel way to manage your finances: Over IM. Adam Pash has written a cool tutorial on how to build an AIM BudgetBot, which makes entering your income and expenses and generating reports as simple as sending an instant message. The BudgetBot is based on a Perl script, which takes some setting up and tweaking, but once it's set up you can add that $150 car repair bill, for example, to your budget just by sending "150 car" to the bot. The coolest thing about it, though, is that once you've got it set up you can send the bot text messages from your cell phone, which means when you're out on the town you can check to see if you can afford those new shoes, and immediately record the purchase before you forget. Head over to Lifehacker to read the tutorial and grab Adam's script.
