Blockbuster to stream video to TiVo

BlockBuster on TiVo
Blockbuster announced today that it plans to offer OnDemand videos to TiVo set top boxes during the second half of 2009. Blockbuster will hardly be the first service offering premium internet video streaming to TiVo. You can already find videos from Amazon, CinemaNow, Jaman, and Netflix on a TiVo. But hey, more choices are always a good thing, right?

Blockbuster tried to launch its own set top box in 2008, but the device hasn't gained much traction.

In addition to making the Blockbuster OnDemand video service available on TiVo boxes, Blockbuster has agreed to sell Tivos at many of its 4,000 video rental stores across the US. The New York Times reports that Blockbuster will offer 5,000 to 10,000 video titles at a time, with new releases costing about $3.99 to rent for 24 hours.

Is Blockbuster video on demand coming to the Wii?

There are 48.5 million Wii's out there, and Blockbuster may be positioning itself to deliver video on demand to them thanks to a newly-announced partnership with Sonic Solutions.

Sonic is the force behind the CinemaNow service, which is available on LG networked blu-ray players and other devices - like Nintendo's wildly popular gaming console.

With the "Everybody's Theatre" streaming anime service set to go live on WiiWare in Japan January 25th, the stage is certainly set for the Wii to gain some additional functionality.

As WiiBrew users already know, the two USB ports at the back work just fine for attaching external hard drives. The Wii has plenty of room for expansion, and it would certainly make sense for Nintendo to offer a service to compete with Netflix on the Xbox 360.

Personally, I'd love to be able to watch video on demand with my Wii. Since I'm in Canada, though, I won't hold my breath.

Movielink gets snapped up by Blockbuster

Movielink gets snapped up by BlockbusterIn an effort to stay ahead of the movies online business and directly compete with the likes of Apple, Amazon, Walk-Mart and Netflix, Blockbuster has announced that they have purchased Movielink.

Movielink was the first online service to offer legal downloads of both movies and TV shows since it was launched in 2001. Along with the deal, Blockbuster will also be acquiring the rights to show films from Movielinks owners which included Warner Bros, MGM, and Paramount.

Blockbuster is also an investor in CinemaNow who allows streaming of over 400 film, TV and concert videos. This new Movielink deal is going to complement the video chains in store rental, as well as create a way to send movies straight to TV's and computers.

No dollar figures of the deal have been announced as of yet.

Blockbuster, Best Buy prepping video download stores?

Best Buy videosArs Trechnica is reporting that Lionsagte CEO Jon Feltheimer may have inadvertently given away plans for digital video download stores from Best Buy and Blockbuster.

During a conference call, Feltheimer reportedly said "we have nearly a dozen active agreements in place for digital delivery of our content." Two of the companies he named were Best Buy and Blockbuster, neither of which has officially announced details of a digital download service.

If true, two of the biggest names in bricks and mortar movie sales and rentals could be entering the increasingly crowded digital delivery marketplace. As of today, most online video stores have limited selections, restrictions on burning movies to DVD and lower quality than a standard DVD, or in some cases, VHS. So while it might seem like there are already more places to purchase or rent online video than necessary, we welcome a little more competition in the marketplace.

Blockbuster: clinging to a dying business model

BlockbusterBecause digital media downloads are skyrocketing, old-skool Blockbuster is merging with music store "Sounds," at least in New Zealand to provide more media than just videos. Is this just the next logical step, or is it because the Internet has opened up a big can of digital whoop-ass on Blockbuster? Blockbuster has been struggling for a while since the likes of Netflix (to which I subscribe) have come to the playground. Blockbuster, Hollywood, and other video stores are clinging to a dying business model in my not-so-humble opinion. Who wants to go get their entertainment anymore? What fun is that? At least Blockbuster realizes that online is the way to go in some way, which is why they have their own Netflix-like online store and why they are merging with Sounds (in New Zealand) to boost sales. How far is far enough to snag the massive amount of business to be had in the online media market? We are only scratching the surface, boys (and girls). Blockbuster plans on launching kiosks to sell DVDs, CDs, ringtones, and games next month in New Zealand. Will this help? If no one is visiting your stores, why would you put in more hardware to sell things to people who will rent online anyway? I predict that unless Blockbuster stops holding on to old ideas and embraces the digital revolution (the Internet, not kiosks in store), it will be a downhill slide to obscurity for them.

The World's Hardest Game 2.0 - Time Waster

So, just how good at time waster games are you? Think you've got the stuff? Well, The World's Hardest Game 2.0 doesn't think you do. Yes, amazingly, it's possible to have a sequel to a game called "The World's Hardest Game". It doesn't seem logically possible, since if the first one was actually the world's hardest, how could another one come along and share the moniker? It made me doubt the name in the first place. That is, until I tried the game. The mechanics of the game are very simple. You are a small red square, ...
