Belgian newspaper group seeks $77 million from Google News

CopiepresseOnce upon a time a group of Belgian newspaper publishers decided that they didn't like how Google was indexing their news stories and publishing headlines and short snippets on Google News and Google.be. While many newspaper publishers realized that Google was actually directing traffic to their web sites, Copiepresse, the organization representing the group of Belgian publishers took Google to court and demanded the search engine remove those newspapers from its index.

Google lost the court case and complied. But apparently not receiving search engine traffic isn't good enough for the newspaper publishers. No, they want cash. Up to €49 million or $77 million in cash, to be specific.

Now, in theory, we get it. Google was posting information online without first getting permission from the publishers. We'd argue that this was probably fair use since Google was only posting snippets including headlines and a few sentences. But the courts ruled otherwise, so whatever. The thing is, search engines are a huge driver of traffic. Asking the world's largest search engine to remove your pages is like asking to lose readers and advertising revenue. Even if the courts determine that Google does owe the newspaper publishers fines for infringing on their copyrights a few years ago, those newspapers are losing money today by keeping themselves out of Google's search index. And over time, that's could cost the companies a lot more than $77 million.

Microsoft creates Digg like sites

microsoft social newsMicrosoft has jumped on the social news bandwagon, creating two websites with a digg like social voting style. One for Norwegian consumers, the other for French Belgians.

The sites let users submit news, headlines, and blog postings that other users can vote on. Similar to the Digg and Netscape models, users check out the latest stories while voting and commenting on their favorites. Users can subscribe to story feeds via RSS and through their Live.com personal site.

If these sites pan out and are popular among users, Microsoft could end up working on more country specific sites once the model is tested and refined.

Trouble for Google in Belgian courts

google belgian courtA copyright complaint was launched by an organization that manages copyright for the Belgian press, and it appears as though they have concerns over Google reproducing articles from French speaking newspapers on Belgian websites. Supposedly Google sells advertising and makes money based on their content.

In the ruling the court has ordered that Google pay 1 million euros a day if it does not comply with their order.

The technology in question is Google's news aggregation feature. Simply choose the types of news feeds you wish to compliment your site with, and all relevant news found on the internet, will be aggregated on your webpage. In this instance, Google is only acting as the technology used to port information through, and is not copying and pasting news, calling it there own. A Google spokeswoman has said that Google is disappointed by the decision, believes it is flawed, and there will be an appeal. The spokesperson went on to reference Google's policy to remove any newspapers content from its index if asked.
