My goodness, my Guinness -- now on the iPhone!

I'll admit right of front that I wish this app was free - it's the least Guinness could do after all the beer money I've spent on their lovely tar-black brew over the years. $1.99 isn't a bad price, though -- especially if you want to ensure your iPhone survival app kit contains valuable pint-enjoying tools.

Right now, the coolest feature is the Guinness pub locator. In most states, you'll be able to quick tap in and find nearby establishments that will happily feed your Guinness craving. Why most states? As it turns out, Hawaii, Indiana, Kentucky, Montana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, and West Virginia aren't keen on people using apps like this.

They are, of course, more than happy to tax your liquor consumption, so it seems a little odd to me that they don't want you to be able to find a pint on your iPhone. But that's a discussion for another day -- back to the app!

Time Waster: Drink beer and throw axes LOTR style

Lord of the Rings Swig & Toss gameYou've seen Lord of the Rings. You've drank beer. You've thrown axes. Ok, so maybe not the last part.

Now do all 3 online for points with the Lord of the Rings Swig & Toss game! All thanks to the wonderful thing we know and love called Flash!

This is brilliant for a few reasons.
  • The more you drink, the harder it is to hold the axe straight, naturally.
  • The more you drink and the better you do, the more points you get!
This is the definition of a Time Waster.

As always, post your scores here...if you can type straight!

RateBeer - Which brew is for you?

RateBeer - Which brew is for you?Ever wish you could harness the power of the collective intelligence to help you find that perfect stout or pale ale? RateBeer may well be the link to help you find that ultimate brew. Touting itself the most accurate and most-visited source of beer information, Rate Beer has an impressive index of beers which are all, well, rated.

Beers can be viewed by latest ratings, category (such as style and country of origin), a top 50 list, annual top beer lists, and any beer or brand you want to search for to see how it fares against the rest of the world of beers. There is subscriber style "premium content" on the site, which mostly revolves around additional rankings like "Beer God's Top 50 Beers" and rankings by state. But all the core features of the site are available for free - which is perusing the main rankings and contributing your own ratings of beers you have enjoyed.

The site also has an event calendar that is fairly stocked with beer-related events, a guide to beer in different areas utilizing Google Maps by highlighting the best places to down a brew around town, and forums for those that like talking about beer almost as much as they like imbibing it. The only downside that we perceive is that the layout and interface are somewhat unintuitive, especially for those of us who are sensitive to usability. But, it's no deal breaker, and is far outweighed by the volume of information and ratings available on the site. Happy brew hunting.

ThisJustBrewed serves social news for social beverages

thisjustbrewed social newsThisJustBrewed serves up some discussions around your favorite beverages, coffee, tea, wine and beer. Social news is everything, so why not one have one targeted around social beverages?

This social news site plays off of the Digg, Netscape model. Users submit stories and articles, and users vote them up or down. Of course the news on ThisJustBrewed is targeted around coffee, tea, wine and beer instead of tech and politics. If you can't get enough Arabica, Earl Grey, Stout or Lager, this is the site for you.

ThisJustBrewed is built off of the Pligg Content Management System. Pligg is a way for designers and developers with little knowledge of PHP and MySQL to install and work with a highly customizable personal content management system.

BeerMeister: the app beermakers use when they're not drinking beer

beermeisterMr. Stuff got tired of looking for decent homebrewing software and decided to write his own. BeerMeister is an all-in-one tool for making the perfect homebrew. It got a collection of pre-made recipe templates (for bock, ale, etc.), a log book, and XML recipe exporter. Could you roll your own version with Filemaker or Excel? Perhaps. But first you'd have to sober up, wouldn't you? Right now it's only for OS X, but if you really need a Linux or PC edition, email Mr. Stuff. BeerMeister is shareware, and it'll cost you $15 at some point...

The World's Hardest Game 2.0 - Time Waster

So, just how good at time waster games are you? Think you've got the stuff? Well, The World's Hardest Game 2.0 doesn't think you do. Yes, amazingly, it's possible to have a sequel to a game called "The World's Hardest Game". It doesn't seem logically possible, since if the first one was actually the world's hardest, how could another one come along and share the moniker? It made me doubt the name in the first place. That is, until I tried the game. The mechanics of the game are very simple. You are a small red square, ...
