Assteroidz: Diamond Dave Edition - Time Waster

Assteroidz: Diamond Dave EditionRight off the bat I want to note that this time waster is PG13; if you'd rather not encounter some mild foul language, it's probably best that you move on to our next post.

Still here? Great. If there's anything that those commercials for peanut butter cups have taught me, it's that something magical happens when you put two things that taste great on their own together. The timewasting flash game equivalent of chocolate and peanut butter? Asteroids, and Van Halen, which result in the interestingly-named Assteroidz: Diamond Dave Edition.

Stick with me here. I mean, who hasn't wanted to shoot massive Eddie Van Halen heads and Van Halen logos with bullets that come out of David Lee Roth's rear end? How about shooting the annoying little Sammy Hagar head that shoots at you while singing clips from Can't Drive 55?

Yes, this is one seriously messed up mashup. And yet, it's compelling. I was never very good at Asteroids, but when I'm playing this version it just doesn't matter so much.

But I still have to ask - what was the developer of this smoking?

Dodge: destroy your enemies with their own fire - Time Waster

In Rayhound, your ship has a gravity field that you can activate to redirect your opposition's attacks. In Dodge, however, you don't even get a gravity field - and everyone that shoots at you has loaded their guns with you-seeking munitions.

The graphics are vintage cool, reminding me of games like Asteroids, Tempest, and Battlezone. To advance, just destroy every enemy ship by flying around like a madman and craftily manouvering your ship so as to avoid being hit.

Bob and weave so that you put the bad guys in harm's way, and you'll blast your way through the levels.

After playing for a while, I'm not sure you can actually die. Sure, I think I've been doing a decent job of avoiding things, but I'm positive that my ship shouldn't have lasted through a couple of the levels. At any rate, it's a nice ego stroke.

Spacetime Arcade releases Realms as freeware for Windows and PocketPC

RealmsLooking for a good way to avoid reading those important work documents on your train ride home this evening? Spacetime Arcade has re-released Realms, an Asteroids-style space shooter as freeware.

The game, which is a couple of years old, used to be a commercial title. But now you can download a free version for Windows Mobile 2003/5.0/6 devices.

There's also a PC version available. And unlike other game companies that have recently released free PC versions of Windows Mobile games, Spacetime Arcade's Realms actually runs in a window that you won't have to squint at on a PC. Sure, there's no full screen option, but at least the game isn't stuck in a 320 x 240 pixel window.

10+ free Windows Mobile games - Mobile Minute

Solterra A few years ago you could impress friends by showing them a minesweeper clone on your PDA. These days, it's not unusual to see full-fledged PC or console games like Call of Duty 2 or Syberia ported to Windows Mobile.

But you don't have to spend a ton of money to turn your PDA into a gaming device. A few weeks ago we showed you five emulators that turn your Windows Mobile PDA into a pocket GameBoy or Playstation. This week, we showcase 10 great standalone games.

Solterra

First up is an amazing 3D space shooter called Solterra. This game is designed to run on Windows Mobile PDAs with an Intel 2700g graphics accelerator, so it's pretty much just for Dell Axim X50v/X51v users.

Solterra was developed as a commercial game, but later released as freeware. The rules are pretty simple. Fly your ship, blast anything that moves, and collect the thingamajigs you can pick up along the way to beef up your spaceships weapons and armor.

Asteroid's Revenge - Today's Time Waster

Asteroid's RevengeHave you ever played Asteroids and felt bad for the asteroids? Okay, me neither, but I guess every punching bag sometimes wants to do a little punching of its own, ergo Asteroid's Revenge. It's a quick and fun Flash game that swaps the roles in the classic space shooter: You control a single large asteroid bent on crushing those pesky triangular ships. The controls work just like its progenitor: left and right to turn, up to accelerate. But, since you're the asteroid, you don't have any weapons and must avoid the ships' bullets lasers projectiles. You get three lives--three successively smaller asteroids--and you receive 10 points for every pointy enemy you decimate.

Multiplayer Asteroids - Today's Time Waster

Multiplayer AsteroidsWhat do you get when you take Asteroids, add a bunch of other players, and, er, take out the asteroids? Multiplayer Asteroids. It's an extremely fast-paced and addicting Flash space shooter that takes its aesthetic cues from the classic arcade rock-blaster and adds a dozen or more players from around the world. The controls will be familiar to Asteroids players: Left and right rotate your ship, up and down move you forward and backward, and the space bar fires. You can also press enter to get a text box to broadcast messages to other players, and you can pick up power-ups to boost your health or weaponry. The game can be different depending on how many players they are: With three or four players there's a little more strategy involved than when there's 10 players, in which case the screen is a blizzard of projectiles. This is a game that's hard to stop playing.

The World's Hardest Game 2.0 - Time Waster

So, just how good at time waster games are you? Think you've got the stuff? Well, The World's Hardest Game 2.0 doesn't think you do. Yes, amazingly, it's possible to have a sequel to a game called "The World's Hardest Game". It doesn't seem logically possible, since if the first one was actually the world's hardest, how could another one come along and share the moniker? It made me doubt the name in the first place. That is, until I tried the game. The mechanics of the game are very simple. You are a small red square, ...
