Assembler 3 offers more frustrating physics puzzle fun -Time Waster

One of the best things about great Time Wasters is that the developers keep giving us more. Take Assembler, for example. Jay first wrote about it last year, and now we've got even more physics puzzle fun and frustration to enjoy with Assembler 3.

The concept hasn't changed: move objects around the play area, stack them up, wedge them, balance them. Do whatever it takes to get the target shape aligned with the goal area.

There are plenty of different ways to pass a level, so you don't have to follow the tips if you don't want to. Balance? Screw that, I'll just wedge this sucker in here so it can't tip anymore and drop the circle in place, thank you very much.

Assembler can turn into a real time sink, so be prepared to flush your afternoon straight down the toilet if you decide to give this one a try. There are custom levels to play, and you can always try to beat your best times in free play once you've beaten story mode.

Physics-based fun with Assembler - Time Waster

Assembler is a fun physics-based game where you get to toss around boxes, beams and other shapes, trying to get a box into a target somewhere in each level. It's difficult to write a review of Assembler without becoming distracted for an hour, playing Assembler. The puzzles become challenging in later levels, but a lot of the fun is in throwing boxes around, hitting them with beams, and making goofy little catapults.

Some levels have more than one target to reach, and a lot of them have metal bits that you have to work around. Solving the puzzles isn't conceptually difficult so much as tricky to actually execute. You can see the structure you need to build, but making it balance properly is another matter. The Assembler high scores are based on time, too, and it's even more challenging to complete some of the levels when you're trying to do it as quickly as possible.

x86 assembler implemented in Javascript

This definitely falls under the category of, "Why? Because we can!" JSASM is an x86 assembler written completely in JavaScript. It's utterly useless, but therein lies the beauty. It's implemented in what is arguably the highest level language -- meaning far removed from the guts and gore of actual machine code -- in common use

Fewer budding young programmers work with assembly language these days, but way back in a decade we call the 1980s you just weren't a home PC hacker unless you could cobble together some simple ASM code to make your machine do stupid tricks. Go much further back than the 80s and, you'd need to have some assembly skills to get anything remotely interesting accomplished.

JSASM is open source (very!) so, if you ever wanted a deeper look inside an assembler, here's your chance.

The World's Hardest Game 2.0 - Time Waster

So, just how good at time waster games are you? Think you've got the stuff? Well, The World's Hardest Game 2.0 doesn't think you do. Yes, amazingly, it's possible to have a sequel to a game called "The World's Hardest Game". It doesn't seem logically possible, since if the first one was actually the world's hardest, how could another one come along and share the moniker? It made me doubt the name in the first place. That is, until I tried the game. The mechanics of the game are very simple. You are a small red square, ...
