AP sues online news aggregator for scraping content

MoreoverThe Associated Press is suing Moreover, an online news aggregator and its parent company VeriSign. The AP says the company is illegally accessing and distributing Associated Press content without permission.

Moreover is sort of like a subscription version of Google News. If you visit the company's main page you get a lot of information about the service, but no free content. Users can sign up for RSS feeds on a variety of topics or you can pay a subscription fee for more in-depth content.

Moreover isn't producing news. It's collecting news from various sources and sending it along to subscribers. Each story you get from Moreover is really just a link and a brief description. If you're using the ad-supported version of Moreover's services you'll have to click through to the original website to find the full content. Paying subscribers can access full length stories from the AP and other news sources.

So here's the question: is Moreover ripping the AP off, or is it actually helping the wire service by directing more readers to AP news content online? While Google claims that the Google News service constitutes "fair use," the company has reached a deal with the AP and several other major news providers to distribute content. But Google also doesn't offer a premium service with full-length content scraped from other news publishers.

Leaked Hot Scoop: Yahoo buys Rivals.com

yahoo buys rivals.comIn a recently leaked story on a PR news site, Yahoo has announced its first deal since the CEO swapping fiasco. GigaOm's Liz Gannes caught sight of this timing error on an Associated Press story that could have Yahoo in the front of the line for the online obsessive sporting fan.

Under Jerry Yang's command its business as usual, and Yahoo is moving along by acquiring the hard core sporting site Rivals.com. The company charges between $10 and $100 per month to over 185,000 subscribers for their subscription based service, and with 2.57 million visitors last September alone, this site will be racking some coins in for Yahoo.

The Yahoo sports section is second only to ESPN.com's, and it looks like this move could be the one they are looking for to push them over the top in this vertical. The purchase price for Rivals.com is not being disclosed.

Newsvine social news site launches

Newsvine

After two months of closed beta testing, social news site Newsvine made its public debut yesterday. A sort of cross between Google News, Digg, and Wikinews, Newsvine combines wire news from the Associated Press and ESPN with user-submitted links and content. Like Digg, users can vote and comment on all stories, but that's about where the similarities end. Newsvine has no tech bent and its topics align pretty closely with those at most major news sites, but the amount of content to be found there is almost jarring. Check out the Newsvine blog for the launch announcement and some feature highlights and a look at some upcoming features.

Graveyard Shift - zombie-busting Time Waster

With Halloween fast approaching, it's a great time to get in some practice defending your territory against zombies. In Graveyard Shift, you take aim at zombies and other creepy-crawlies, blasting them into splatters of cartoony green guts. It's a casual first-person shooter, and it's very easy to get the hang of - use the mouse to aim, click to fire. Graveyard Shift has at least 15 levels, and it might even have some secret stages I haven't unlocked yet. They key to getting good at Graveyard Shift is learning to use ...
