ajaxXLS: Web-based spreadsheet from ajaxLaunch

ajaxXLSMichael Robertson's ajaxLaunch is trying hard to keep up the buzz from the launches of its web-based word processor ajaxWrite and drawing app ajaxSketch, and today it's launched ajaxXLS, a web-based spreadsheet app. ajaxXLS looks promising, and will no doubt look familiar to Excel users, but having spent a few minutes with it I can already tell ajaxXLS is far from finished. In fact, it's downright hard to use and seems like it would be infuriating to anyone trying to switch from Excel. Some of its issues might just be due to high opening day user load, but much of it just seems buggy or incomplete. Here's hoping Robertson can turn ajaxXLS into something usable; at present it's uninspiring.

An in-depth look at ajaxWrite

extreme tech reviews ajaxwriteThe criticisms are, in part, the same problems you find with any web-based application. Namely, keyboard shortcuts don't always work (or get implemented), browser-specific technology (in this case, Firefox 1.5), and of course some folks raise security issues with the whole ajax thing... But Extremetech gets very specific in criticisms of ajaxWrite, which we mentioned earlier. It's a top-to-bottom review of the service, and the results aren't great. Then again, I see all of the ajaxLaunch stuff as being more proof-of-concept. Why it isn't ajaxLaunchBeta is beyond me. After all, Beta is the new black. All ajaxWrite makes me want is Writely to emerge from the Google merge.

Another web word processor: ajaxWrite

ajaxwrite
Om Malik reports on a project from Michael Robertson called ajaxWrite. Yes, it's another web-based word processor. The nice thing is, you get a window to yourself, and that window (complete with tabs for your docs) is a pretty basic word processor. I'm soaking in it right now... What's really impressive is the speed and stability of the app. That could be due to it only being compatible with Firefox, as having only one target allows you to focus on streamlining your performance. One essential feature for me is the ability to save your writing as a Word doc (the default), plain text, RTF, or PDF. Some limitations appear to be no inline saving, so if you lose power or your connection, you'd have to copy/paste your Great American Novel. Like Om, I'm not sure what the business model is, but with no signup, speed, stability, and good Save As formats, it appears to be a useful tool for when you're needing a web-based word processor without all the bells and whistles.

The World's Hardest Game 2.0 - Time Waster

So, just how good at time waster games are you? Think you've got the stuff? Well, The World's Hardest Game 2.0 doesn't think you do. Yes, amazingly, it's possible to have a sequel to a game called "The World's Hardest Game". It doesn't seem logically possible, since if the first one was actually the world's hardest, how could another one come along and share the moniker? It made me doubt the name in the first place. That is, until I tried the game. The mechanics of the game are very simple. You are a small red square, ...
